    [01] THE GREEK TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES WERE IMPRESSIVE IN THE FIRST DAY OF THE IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

    The performance of the Greek track and field champions was impressive in the morning events of the first day of the 6th World Championships in Athletics "Athens '97" that take place in the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

    Olga Vasdeki qualified for the triple jump finals with a new Greek record when she jumped 14 meters and 49 centimeters. Katerina Thanou got the first place in 1st round with 11''.32 and qualified for the 2nd round of the 100m. W.

    Angelos Pavlakakis qualified for the 2nd round of the 100m. M breaking a new Greek record with 10''.11, while Charis Papadias also qualified for the 2nd round of the 100m. M with 10''.32.

    [02] RADICAL CHANGES IN ALL LEVELS OF EDUCATION

    Greek Minister of Education Gerasimos Arsenis announced radical changes in all levels of education.

    Starting in September the evaluation of students will be made in a totally new way, while in October the "open university" institution will be put into effect and all secondary education graduates will be free to attend.

    [03] MESSAGE OF YILMAZ TO SIMITIS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE GREEK-TURKISH RELATIONS

    Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz sent a message to Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis for the continuation of the improvement in the Greek-Turkish relations. The message was sent in response to mr.Simitis' congratulatory telegram to the new Turkish government.

    Mr.Yilmaz stated that he is certain that Turkey and Greece can enter a new era of friendship and cooperation in bilateral relations and also expressed the certainty that the two countries will solve their differences within the framework of the Madrid agreement.

    [04] GREEK GOVERNMENT DELEGATION WILL VISIT ALBANIA ON TUESDAY

    A large government delegation headed by Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos will be in Tirana on Tuesday for talks with the Albanian government.

    The issues that will be discussed will be illegal immigration, investments and trade relations.

    [05] THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL IS SATISFIED WITH THE CLERIDES-DENKTASH TALKS

    UN Secretary General mr.Annan expressed satisfaction on the developments in the Nicosia talks held between Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    A UN Secretary General spokesman mentioned that the outcome of the talks was positive as the two sides agreed to examine the problem of those missing since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

    The US State Department characterized as positive and significant step the agreement reached by Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash for the solution of the humanitarian issue of those still missing since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

    According to a US State Department spokesman, the agreement reached by Clerides and Denktash for the return of the remains of Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots missing since 1974, is a positive step. The spokesman congratulated the UN for its assistance adding that congratulations deserve and the leaders of the two communities for their initiative to proceed with the solution of this humanitarian issue, while he welcomed the intention of both sides to continue their meetings in Cyprus for talks on humanitarian issues.

    Commenting on Denktash's statements, who is threatening that he will not go to Geneva for the second round of direct talks, the US spokesman expressed the hope that the two sides will accept the UN invitation.

    [07] THE #5 AND #6 NUCLEAR REACTORS OF KOZLODUI ARE BEING UPDATED

    The financing and modernization programme for Kozlodui's nuclear reactors number 5 and number 6 was examined by Bulgarian government vice-President Gevgeni Bakarziev and "Siemens" consortium General Director mr.Sobotka.

    The "Kozlodui" European consortium, which is directed by "Siemens", will contribute 50% of the 250-300 million ECU that will be absorbed by the programme, 30% will come from France and Germany, while the rest 20% will be contributed by Russian companies.

    [08] BULGARIA HAS OVERCOME THE DANGER OF ECONOMIC COLLAPSE

    Bulgaria has overcome the danger of economic collapse, according to a report prepared by a US financial organization. Based on the report, Bulgaria's foreign exchange reserves will reach 1,9 billion dollars by the end of 1997, its GDP will increase to 4%, while inflation in 1998 will drop to 12%.

    It should be reminded that at the end of January 1997, Bulgaria's Central Bank foreign exchange reserves were 415 million dollars and on May 31 had increased to 1,3 billion dollars.
