    The terrorist organization "17 November" with a second written statement that was sent yesterday to the newspaper "Eleftherotypia" claims responsibility for the rocket attack against the US Embassy in Athens in early 1996. Meanwhile, the funeral of the terrorist organization's most recent victim, shipowner Kostas Peratikos, will be held today.

    Yesterday, the responsible ministerial committee decided on the status of operation for the Elefsina Shipyards and the devolution agreement will be ratified in Parliament within a month.

    [02] SIMITIS: THE ECONOMIC RESULTS SEND OUT OPTIMISTIC MESSAGES

    The achieved economic results send out optimistic messages regarding the course of the economy, stated Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in a speech delivered during his visit to the north-western Greek city of Ioannina yesterday.

    Mr.Simitis reiterated the government's expressed positions on the issues of national interest, stressing that Greece will not negotiate its sovereign rights.

    The Prime Minister also announced that the armed forces along the borders with Albania will be reinforced to stop the wave of illegal immigrants trying to enter Greece, while he stated that the Greek minority should stay in Albania in order to preserve its rights.

    In the speech delivered in Ioannina, mr.Simitis also stated that the infrastructure projects in the region, which started in 1994, will be completed in the year 2000 and are estimated to cost 700 billion drachmas.

    The revision of the Maastricht Treaty has progressed in a way but in the end many will be dissatisfied, predicted today from Alexandroupolis EU Commissioner Christos Papoutsis, responding to questions on the completion of the proceedings held within the framework of the Inter-Governmental Conference for the revision of the Maastricht Treaty.

    Mr.Papoutsis pointed out that the EU governments were not ready to adopt ambitious and daring proposals for the creation of a new Europe, while he stressed that regarding the joint foreign and defence policy there were no satisfactory results from the consultations held within the framework of the Inter-Governmental Conference.

    He also pointed out that no mutual assistance clause was established to be in effect in case an EU member-state has problems and added that the EU should offer assistance to its member-states on issues of foreign policy problems with third countries.

    The first phase of the direct talks between Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in New York will be held on July 9-13.

    According to information reported by the Cypriot Radio and Television, this phase of the talks will be of exploratory nature and will not have a specific agenda in order to give the opportunity to the two sides to decide on the issues they want to discuss.

    [05] 17 BOSNIAN-SERBS WILL TRAVEL 850 KILOMETERS ON FOOT TO VISIT MOUNT ATHOS

    Seventeen Bosnian-Serbs will cover 850 kilometers on foot to visit the monastic community of Mount Athos in Chalkidiki, northern Greece.

    Their starting-point was the city of Trebinja and after crossing Kosovo, Serbia and FYROM will arrive in Thessaloniki and later at Mount Athos. They are expected to be in FYROM on June 17 and on June 23 will be in Thessaloniki.

    [06] OPINION POLL PREDICTS VICTORY OF THE LEFT IN TOMORROW'S ELECTIONS IN FRANCE

    An opinion poll presented on the Internet pages of the newspaper "Liberation" predicts victory of the Left in the second round of the French parliamentary elections that will be held tomorrow.

    In total, the Left will get 316 seats, while the center-right will manage to secure 259. According to the poll, the ultra-right National Front Party will win 2 seats in the French Parliament.
