NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] EUROPE[C] WORLDNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] SAE'S 2ND PLENARY SESSION MEETING WILL BE HELD IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 16:37 GMT+2Thessaloniki 10 May (MPA)The proceedings of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, meeting continue in the presence of many government ministers. The next plenary session meeting of SAE will be held in Thessaloniki in December.The General Secretary for Hellenes Abroad issues mr.Stavros Lambrianidis expressed his complete satisfaction regarding the organizing process for the holding of the 2nd SAE meeting. Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos met with SAE's Presiding Board and stated that the return of the Parthenon marbles is the firm goal of the Greek culture policy. He stated that he was very happy to find out that a large number of scientists, journalists, plain citizens and Parliament deputies in Britain are in support of the return of the Parthenon marbles to Greece. [02] PASOK'S ORGANIZING CONFERENCE BEGAN IN ATHENSWeb Posted: 16:37 GMT+2Athens 10 May (MPA)The two-day organizing conference of the governing party of PASOK began this morning in Athens.The conference opened with a speech delivered by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, who stated that the circle of disagreements inside the party has closed. Referring to the Greek-Turkish relations, mr.Simitis reiterated that Greece will not discuss its sovereign rights which are based on International Law and Treaties and if Turkey proves that it respects International Law then Greece will help this country in its European course. On the role of the Committee of Experts, mr.Simitis said that with its establishment Greece seeks to promote the improvement of the climate existing between the two countries. Earlier, in Thessaloniki mr.Santer had met with the leader of the main opposition party of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis.Mr.Santer speaking in Thessaloniki yesterday pointed out that there is a positive trend in Greece's public economy and also in the potential of northern Greek businesses to play a significant role in the creation of new economic ties with the neighbouring countries. [04] KINKEL: TURKEY CAN NOT BECOME AN EU MEMBER IN THE NEAR FUTUREWeb Posted: 16:37 GMT+2Bonn 10 May (MPA)German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel stated in a speech delivered within the framework of the annual Conference of the German Scientific Society of Journalism and Communications in Glessen, that Turkey can not become an EU member in the near future.Mr.Kinkel clarified that the decisive reasons blocking Turkey's membership in the EU are not of a cultural nature. He characteristically stated that what blocks its membership is the violations of human rights, the Kurdish issue and the economic problems the country faces. Nevertheless, mr.Kinkel underlined the role Turkey can play in the EU by saying that it can become a bridge linking Europe with the islamic world. [C] WORLD[05] THE POPE IS POSSIBLE TO MEET WITH THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH AND THE PATRIARCH OF MOSCOWWeb Posted: 16:37 GMT+2Vienna 10 May (MPA)A historic event of great importance for the Christian world is likely to take place in Vienna in June.According to Austrian newspaper "Die Presse", that cites well informed sources, a meeting of Pope John-Paul B' with Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos and Patriarch of Moscow, Alexios B' is possible to be held in the Austrian capital on June 21. The newspaper writes that the meeting is being prepared under great secrecy for years and that it is going to be announced soon. This will be the first meeting of the Christian leaders after the Schism of the Churches in 1054.
