    [01] GREECE WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE SECOND PHASE OF THE EMU IN 2001

    Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in an interview to a German radio station expressed the belief that Greece will be ready to participate in the second phase of the European economic and monetary unification by the year 2001.

    Meanwhile, as it was made known, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl accepted an invitation by Prime Minister Simitis and will make a formal visit to Greece this year.

    [02] A COASTGUARD OFFICER WAS KILLED IN AN EXCHANGE OF GUNFIRE IN CORFU

    A Greek Coastguard officer was killed in the Ionian island of Corfu in an exchange of gunfire between members of the force and Albanian smugglers on board a speed-boat. The victim is 22-yearold Marinos Zapatis.

    Coastguard force deputy-Chief Periklis Katsimas attended an emergency meeting with the Coastguard head in Corfu and other officials to deal with situation.

    [03] TSOCHATZOPOULOS WILL VISIT THE GREEK SOLDIERS IN ALBANIA

    Greek Minister of Defence Akis Tsochatzopoulos will visit the Greek soldiers in Albania on Monday, while Undersecretary of Defence Dimitris Apostolakis will visit the Greek force deployed in Bosnia.

    Already, 420 Greek soldiers are stationed in military camps near Tirana, while the last Greek army unit that will participate in the multi-national protection force in Albania will depart for the neighbouring country on Tuesday.

    [04] THE EXODUS OF EASTER HOLIDAY-MAKERS HAS BEEN COMPLETED

    Traffic moves without problems in the Greek national road networks, while Traffic Police estimates that the exodus of Easter holiday-makers has been completed. Already, from Good Friday until today, 18 people were killed and 158 were injured in 118 traffic accidents in different parts of the national road network.

    Emergency measures for the safe movement of holiday-makers are still in effect on the national road network, the airports and the ports of the country.

    [05] 62% OF THE GREEKS SEE POSITIVELLY A DIALOGUE WITH TURKEY

    The overwhelming majority of the Greeks see positivelly a dialogue with Turkey even if it is held just for recording the problems existing in the relations between the two countries.

    According to an opinion poll published today in the Athens newspaper "Kiriakatiki Eleftherotypia", 62% of those asked gave a positive response to the question concerning the prospect of a dialogue, while only 33% responded negativelly to this approach. The opinion poll was conducted on April 21-23 in the region of Attica on a sample of 825 people.

    Based on the opinion poll results, the overwhelming majority of the voters, covering the whole spectrum of political parties in Greece, adopt a positive position regarding the prospect of a "realistic solution" and only the voters supporting the Communist Party and the Political Spring Party appear divided.

    In support of a dialogue are mainly young people and those with a higher education.

    [06] TWO TURKISH GOVERNMENT MINISTERS RESIGNED

    The Turkish government Ministers of Commerce and Health announced their resignation this morning on the grounds of personal disagreement with Prime Minister Erbakan's government. The two ministers belong to the True Path Party and before the announcement of their resignations they had a meeting with their party leader Tansu Ciller.

    Meanwhile, the meeting of the National Security Council will be held today in a tense atmosphere due to the latest developments and will examine measures that are necessary to counter the threats against the secular state in Turkey.

    The Council's general secretary Ilhan Kilits is expected to present a report that will refer to the measures decided and will include information on the measures implemented by the government until now.

    [07] AN EXPLOSION INJURED TWENTY PEOPLE IN NORTHERN ALBANIA

    Twenty people were injured in northern Albania in an explosion that occured this morning in a arms depot. According to information, the explosion was caused by sniper fire and destroyed 8 houses.

    The incident took place in the village of Grika Emanid, near the town of Leza, north of Tirana.
