    [01] PANGALOS: THERE WILL NOT BE AN INFORMAL DIALOGUE WITH TURKEY

    The Greek government will send its final positions to the Dutch EU Presidency early next week regarding the Committee of Specialists that will be made up of Greeks and Turks.

    Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos reiterated that there will not be an informal Greek-Turkish dialogue, while he confirmed that he will meet with his Turkish counterpart Tansu Ciller in Istanbul on April 30.

    [02] GREECE WILL SEND HUMANITARIAN AID TO SOUTH ALBANIA IN VIEW OF THE CHRISTIAN ORTHODOX EASTER

    Greece will send humanitarian aid to the ethnic Greek minority regions in south Albania in view of the Christian Orthodox Easter and if necessary the distribution of the aid will be protected by a military force.

    In the near future the Greek soldiers will be moved to Kakavia and Kristalopigi as well as, to other regions of the Albanian south, while the Greek military force will be increased by 200 men.

    The Greek economy has made progress in the past few years according to an EU Commission report that will be presented in Brussels on Wednesday. In the report a special referrence is made on the decrease of the inflation, while measures are being recommended that will bring inflation down to 4, 5%.

    The report mentions that taxation should be broadened and that the efficiency of the tax-collection system and public administration should be strengthened. It also suggests the reduction of public spending and the implementation of privatizations.

    Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance Yiannos Papantoniou met in New York with Archbishop of America Spiridon.

    Responding to a question by journalists, mr.Papantoniou stated that during his trip to the United States he met with american businessmen, and with members of the US government, like Secretary of Commerce mr.Daley to discuss the trends of the Greek economy and the prospects for the strengthening of the Greek-US economic cooperation in Greece and in the wider Balkan and Black Sea region.

    [05] 6,8 MILLION BULGARIANS VOTE FOR THE ELECTION OF A NEW PARLIAMENT

    The 6,8 million voters in Bulgaria go to the polls today to elect the members of the new Parliament. In the elections run 35 political parties and coalitions while there are 4.448 candidates for the 240 seats in the Bulgarian Parliament.

    The country is divided into 31 constituencies, while for the Bulgarian nationals living abroad, 152 polling stations have been set up in 64 countries.

    The Bulgarian President in statements he made to the Greek state television station ET-1, expressed the certainty that the Greek-Bulgarian relations will be further improved.

    [06] THE GREEK CONSULATE IN GJIROKASTRA HAS REOPENED

    According to the Albanian press, the Greek Consulate in Gjirokastra has reopened.

    Based on press information, the immigration movement of Albanian civilians from the southern regions and especially from villages, becomes more and more obvious.

    [07] TURKISH-CYPRIOTS VISITED THE FREE REGIONS OF CYPRUS

    The Greek-Cypriots welcomed the 450 Turkish-Cypriots who arrived this morning to the free regions of Cyprus coming from the Turkish occupied territories in the northern part of the island.

    The Turkish-Cypriots went to the Larnaka Tekke for a pilgrimage on the occasion of the muslim religious celebrations for the "Feast of the Sucrifices", known as Kurban Bayram.

    A Greek department store will open in Kosovo's Pristina by the end of May and consumers will be able to buy household goods from Greece paying in dinars.

    The preparations for the opening of the department store will be completed soon and its main financier is the Bank of Vojvodina in Pristina.

    [09] THE GREEKS ARE MISTRUSTFUL OF THE US INITIATIVE ON CYPRUS

    World Council of Hellenes Abroad President mr.Andrew Athens in a letter to US President Bill Clinton explains the results of a recent opinion poll according to which, 85% of the Greeks do not trust the US initiative for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    In his letter mr.Athens points out that the policy of the Clinton administration toward Greece is the best in the past 25 years, adding that the good intentions of the United States are being overshadowed by the threats and attacks launched by Turkey.

    Mr.Athens justifying the mistrust of the Greeks toward the US policy on Cyprus, stressed that the Greeks see that contrary to the US declarations the Clinton administration silently encourages Turkey's policy by continuing to send military materials to this country.

    [10] A NEW UN ENVOY WAS APPOINTED TO CYPRUS

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan decided to appoint mr.Diego Cordovez from Ecuador to the position of the special envoy to Cyprus and as it was made known, he will assume his duties on April 28, 1997 replacing professor Han Sung-Joo, who resigned recently.

    In the announcement made by the press spokesman of the UN Secretary-General, it is stressed that the head of the international organization is determined to exert pressures for stronger efforts in order to be achieved a comprehensive solution for the Cyprus problem.

    Mr.Annan also expresses the hope that the current procedure will lead to direct talks in the next two or three months, while the main task of mr.Cordovez will be to brief and assist the UN Secretary-General, who will preside in the next rounds of the inter-communal talks in Cyprus.
