    [A] NATIONAL NEWS

    [01] THE GREEK UNIT WILL BE DEPLOYED IN TIRANA AND VLORA

    Greek Minister of Defence Akis Tsochatzopoulos had a telephone communication with his Italian counterpart mr.Andreata on the issue of the multi-national protection force in Albania, who suggested that the Greek battalion will be deployed in Tirana and one of its companies in the city of Vlora. Nevertheless, the final decisions on the matter will be made in the next few days in Rome where the Ministers of Defence of the countries participating in the multi-national force, which will be deployed in Albania, are expected to hold a meeting.

    Mr.Tsochatzopoulos stated to reporters that the Greek battalion will be made up of regular army officers and added that the Pentagon officials will discuss if a number of army reserves will be needed.

    [02] INFLATION IN GREECE WILL DROP TO 4,5% BY THE END OF THE YEAR

    Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance Yiannos Papantoniou, speaking in a conference organized in Athens by the magazine "The Economist", stressed the need for the correct application of the tax bill proposed by the government.

    Mr.Papantoniou pointed out that this way recovery will be achieved in the following months regarding public revenues and predicted that inflation will drop to 4,5% by the end of the year.

    The Minister of National Economy and Finance also announced that privatizations in the wider public sector will be accelerated.

    [03] MELBOURNE TO HOUSE GREEK ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN SEPTEMBER 1998

    A Greek Archaeological Museum will be housed in Melbourne beginning in September 1998. According to written statements of Victoria's Premier Jeff Kennet, a known philhellene, the museum is currently in the works, to be housed at the city's old customs house. Mr. Kennet has stated that the Greek government has agreed to support "on principle" the creation of this Museum, and has offered to provide it with a series of archaeological exhibits.

    [04] ITALY SAYS OK TO GREEK FORCES IN SOUTHERN ALBANIA

    The Italian administrators of the multi-national force to be assigned to Albania have accepted Greece's request to assign its troops in the country's southern section as well. Albania's Socialist leader Fatos Nano is currently in Strasburg where he will meet with the leaders of the Socialist Group and leaders from the European Parliament.

    [05] GREEK ALTERNATE FOREIGN MINISTER OFFERS WAYS TO COMBAT UNEMPLOYMENT

    Greece's alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou tabled proposals on combating unemployment, during the council of European Union Foreign Ministers held in the Netherlands today. Specifically, Mr. Papandreou stated that a coordinating body must be formed at a Community level which will aim at creating new jobs. Also, Mr. Papandreou stressed the fact that Greece supports the inclusion of the social agreement in the New Treaty's main document, which is to replace the Maastricht Treaty, but also wants to create a new chapter regarding employment.

    [06] GREEK PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION IN THE INTER-PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY CONFERENCE IN SEOUL

    A Greek parliamentary delegation left for Seoul to represent Greece in the 97th Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Conference that will be held on April 10-15.

    In the Conference will be discussed the Cyprus problem, as well as world politics, the economic and social situation, the cooperation for peace and stability at a regional and international level, the cooperation for the promotion of the respect of sovereignty and independence of states and also, economic policies in view of the new world developments.

    [07] GREEK PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT MEETS WITH TURKISH COUNTERPART

    The President of Greece's Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis and his Turkish counterpart Mustafa Kalemli saw eye to eye on the need to improve the relations between their countries, during their meeting in Athens yesterday, within the framework of the Conference of Parliaments of Mediterranean Region countries. The two officials referred to the Greek-Turkish friendship as it was established by Greece's Eleftherios Venizelos and Turkey's Kemal Ataturk. Msgrs. Kaklamanis and Kalemli stated that Venizelos and Ataturk had removed all thorns that hurt the two peoples.

    [08] THE FLIGHTS OF GREEK JETS OVER CYPRUS ARE LAWFUL

    The flights of Greek jets over Cyprus are legal and are held after consultations and with the approval of the Cypriot government, while the flights of the Turkish jets are arbitrarily held without legal grounds and without the permission of the Cypriot government, stated Greek Undersecretary of National Defence Dimitris Apostolakis in an interview in New York.

    Mr.Apostolakis, who is visiting the United States since Sunday heading a Western European Union delegation, maintained that what was called as flight moratorium in Cyprus in reality does not exist.

    [09] GREEKS FROM MELBOURNE ESTABLISH POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL IN GJIROCASTER

    Greeks from Melbourne will conduct a drive to collect money for the establishment of a polytechnic school in Gjirocaster. This initiative was drawn by the Committee of Solidarity for Greeks of Northern Epirus and Australia's Panepirotic Federation. The two organizations pointed out the need to create a school for the technical training of Greeks in Albania and called on the Greek government to support them in their task.

    [10] CONFERENCE ON STABILITY AND GOOD NEIGHBOURLY RELATIONS IN SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE

    The Conference on stability and the promotion of good neighbourly relations in south-eastern Europe opens today in Skopje, with the participation of representatives from 26 countries of south-eastern and western Europe.

    In the meeting also participate representatives from the EU, the European Commission, the OSCE, the UN Economic Committee as well as, a senior representative from Bosnia.

    [11] THE NEW CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON

    The new Cypriot government will be officially announced this afternoon or tomorrow after Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides' decision to move ahead with a reshuffle.

    According to reliable information from the Cyprus News Agency, the post of the Foreign Ministry will be given to Cypriot government spokesman Yiannakis Kasoulides, who will replace Alekos Michaelides, while to the position of the government spokesman will be appointed mr.Manolis Christofis, who until today was Minister of Health.

    [12] TWO-DAY CONFERENCE ON THE BETTER MANAGEMENT OF THE BURGAS- ALEXANDROUPOLIS OIL PIPELINE

    A two-day scientific and economic conference opens today in the prefecture of Evros in northern Greece on the Burgas- Alexandroupolis oil pipeline, in the presence of representatives from the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy. The conference aims at informing the local authorities on the better management of this major project.

    There will be presentations on the latest european technology used in such projects and also, will be discussed issues concerning safety and environment protection during the transport of oil through pipelines from and to the sea terminals.

    [13] NATO NAVY FORCE UNDER A GREEK COMMANDER IS VISITING ISTANBUL

    The Turkish press referred to the arrival in the port of Istanbul yesterday of warships from NATO's permanent naval force in the Mediterranean in which participate 8 NATO members, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holand, Britain, the United States and Turkey.

    The Turkish newspaper "Cumhurriyet", under the headline "The guards of Mediterranean visited Istanbul", referred to the press briefing made by Greek Navy officer Konstantinos Nikitiades, heading the force, who stressed that the mission's priority is the presence of a NATO direct intervention force in the Mediterranean and the coordinated moves of 8 countries. He clarified that for such a mission to be undertaken, a unanimous political decision by the NATO member-states is necessary.

    The force was established for the first time after the incidents in former Yugoslavia to oversee the implementation of the embargo. Among its tasks are training, and participation in exercises with other countries within the framework of NATO and the Partnership for Peace programme, as well as port visits and ship maintenance.

    The Greek commander stated that the force has already visited Marocco, Egypt, Ukraine and Tunisia and has participated in joint military exercises with the naval forces of Ukraine and Romania, while he concluded that their next stop will be the port of Haifa in Israel.

    [14] ACCIDENT OCCURS AT KOZLODUI, NO VICTIMS

    A serious accident occured yesterday afternoon at Bulgaria's elecricity production nuclear plant at Kozlodui when a mechanical crane used for performing updating works on the plant caused a rift on the wall housing the plant's second nuclear reactor. According to official reports, there were no victims or injuries, and no radioenergy leakage was noted.

    [15] THE MULTI-NATIONAL FORCE THAT WILL BE DEPLOYED IN ALBANIA WILL BE FREE TO USE FYROM'S ROAD NETWORKS AND AIRPORTS

    The government of FYROM announced that the countries that will participate in the multi-national force to be deployed in Albania shortly, will be free to use the country's road networks and its two airports.

    FYROM's cabinet decided yesterday that due to the small distance between FYROM and Albania, the road networks of FYROM can help considerably in the transport of the multi-national force's soldiers and equipment to Albania. Also, FYROM's cabinet decided that the responsible state institutions should undertake coordinated actions that will facilitate the humanitarian aid mission to Albania.

    [16] MUNICIPALITY OF KALAMARIA: CULTURAL COOPERATION WITH THE SERB REPUBLIC IN BOSNIA

    The municipality of Kalamaria in Thessaloniki began a cultural cooperation with the Serb Republic in Bosnia and today a group of 46 dancers was sent to the municipality of Zvornik to participate in the events that will be held tomorrow in the city within the framework of the celebrations for the anniversary of its independence.

    The cooperation with the Serb Republic in Bosnia on a culture level had been agreed during the latest visit of Kalamaria's mayor to Bosnia a few months ago.

    On Friday, the Greek dancers will present their programme in the cultural center of the city of Banja Luka, where the village of "New Kalamaria" will be built to house the families of the 98 children, who stayed with families in Kalamaria for 7 months.
