    Tirana, March 30 (MPA)

Albanian refugees were the victims of last night's tragedy in the Adriatic Sea when an Italian corvette collided with a small Albanian boat, trying to stop it from entering the Italian territorial waters.

Four Albanian refugees drowned while 34 survivors were rescued. According to the survivors, the boat was carrying 120 people.

The Italian local court of Brindezi holds the captain of the Italian corvette responsbile for the tragedy but the Italian authorities are defending their captain and arrested the Albanian ship's captain instead, in spite of the intense protests issued from the Albanian government.

The press in Tirana reports that the Albanian captain had raised a white flag, signaling that he was transporting regugees, in addition to having brought all the children on the deck as a sure sign of who his passengers were.

The Vatican has also issued an announcement regarding the tragedy, wherein it indirectly holds the Italian capitan responsible.

[04] ALBANIAN PREMIER TO VISIT ATHENS ON WEDNESDAY

Albanian Prime Minister Baskim Fino will be in Athens on Wednesday where he will meet with Greece's Premier Kostas Simitis.

Mr. Fino has welcomed the UN Security Council's decision to approve the deployment of a multi-national military force in Albania.

In a press conference, Mr. Fino added that the request for a military intervention had been expressed by the political parties in Albania, was co- signed by the President and the Prime Minister and later was presented to Parliament for a formal approval, which it gained.

[06] FYROM: UN PEACE-KEEPING FORCES TO REMAIN UNTIL APRIL 30

    Web Posted: 20:44 GMT+2

    Skopje, March 30 (MPA)

The UN Security Council has issued a mandate to the peace-keeping force UNPREDEP to extend the force's stay in Skopje for one more month, while reducing its number by 300 men.

The presence of the United Nations Preventine Development Program (UNPREDEP) at the FYROM-Albania border has reportedly resulted in the restoration of order at the region.

UNPREDEP's press officer Claire Graimes told the Macedonian Press Agency that there have been no incidents of arms smuggling from Albania into FYROM so far, although political circles in FYROM are doubtful if such incident would ever be given publicity.

Moreover, UNPREDEP officials told the M.P.A. that a mass exodus of refugees from Albania is unlikely, while they also stated that the United Nations Highest Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), which has an office in Skopje, has taken all the necessary measures.
