    [01] GREECE CELEBRATES 1821'S ANNIVERSARY OF FREEDOM FROM TURKISH YOKE

    The revolution of 1821 that put an end to the four-centuries long Turkish occupation was celebrated grandiosly today in Greece and other countries which feature a strong Greek community.

    In Athens, political and state leaders attended the doxology service of the Metropolitan Church and in turn watched the military parade. Similar events were organized in Thessaloniki and other cities throughout the country.

    In their messages, the political leaders advised all Greeks to gain inspiration from their heroic predecessors who freed Greece from slavery.

    [02] GREEK AND FOREIGN AUTHORS TO ATTEND SYMPOSIUM OF FICTION LITERATURE

    Greek and foreign authors will participate at the Symposium of Fiction Literature which is to be held on April 1, at the Aristotelean University of Thessaloniki.

    The Symposium, which is organized by the Organization "Thessaloniki, Cultural Capital of Europe '97" is dedicated to German author Arthur Geoff Arens.

    [03] LEADERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD SALUTE GREECE'S NATIONAL HOLIDAY

    Athens, March 25 (MPA)

    Political and state leaders throughout the world sent congratulatory telegrams to the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos, for the anniversary of the country's national holiday that commemorates Grecce's revolution against the Turkish yoke in 1821.

    President of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides, attending the parade in Nicosia, stated that "year after year, the Cypriot Greeks derive strength to continue undaunted with the struggle for justice."

    Turkish President Suleiman Demirel has forwarded a congratulatory telegram to President Stephanopoulos wherein he expresses his best wishes for the Greek national holiday.

    Also, FYROM's President Kiro Gligorov, Premier Branco Cervenkovski and Foreign Minister Ljubomir Frtckovski have all forwarded congratulatory telegrams to their Greek counterparts.

    [04] PAULINE GREEN: TURKEY IS FOR RESOLUTION OF CYPRUS ISSUE

    London, March 25 (MPA)

    British Euro-deputy Pauline Green assessed the recent statements made by Turkish Premier Necmettin Erbakan and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller, with whom he met in Ankara, as being enouraging in regards to resolving the Cyprus issue.

    In a interview given in London, Ms. Green said that the Turkish leaders' statements were encouraging, being the first time they did not include chauvinistic statements, such as that Cyprus is a military fortress of Greece.

    "This time, I got the impression that Turkey believes that the time has come for the Cyprus issue to be resolved. But then again, this could just be words," she stated.

    She further added that everyone wishes for the Turkish-Cypriots to be involved in Cyprus' negotiations for accession to the European Union.

    "When there is a solution, the Turkish-Cypriots will take their place with the Greek-Cypriots in govenrment and together they will negotiate the island's accession to the EU," she opined.

    [05] TURKEY-FYROM LOOK INTO DEFENSE COOPERATION

    Skopje, March 25 (MPA)

    FYROM's Defense Minister Blagoi Handjiski received a Turkish delegation, headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Onur Oimen in Skopje today.

    FYROM's and Turkey's officials discussed opportunities for cooperation on the defense sector and also examined the security situation in the Balkan region, specifically in Albania.

    [06] SITUATION IN ALBANIA STILL WORRISOME, 15 WOUNDED IN EXCHANGE OF FIRE

    Gjirokastrer, March 25 (MPA)

    The situation in Albania continues to be worrisome, especially in the country's southern region where masked gunmen are constantly pillaging villages and looting stores.

    The region's Greek ethnic minority has repeatedly reported attacks and robberies, while reports state that last night 15 persons where wounded during an exchange of fire that occured between two groups of gunmen in Gjirokastrer. The majority of them suffered severe injuries and are to be transported to a hospital in the Greek city of Ioannina.

    Traffic has increased at the Greek-Albanian borders where officials report that about 400 frightened Albanians seek refuge in Greece every day.

    [07] EU-TURKEY ASSOCIATION COUNCIL TO BE HELD ON APRIL 29

    _ The European Union's 15 Foreign Ministers agreed yesterday in Brussels that the EU-Turkey Association Council will be held on April 29. _ At the same time, the alllies pressured Greece's alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou into lifting Athens' objections over Turkey's funding from the Community.

    [08] ALBANIAN PREMIER BASHKIM FINO ON A VISIT TO ITALY

    _ Albanian Premier Bashkim Fino is currently on a visit to Rome where he is to try and convince the Italian government to grant financial assistance and other forms of aid to his country. _ Meanwhile, the European Union's Foreign Ministers are likely to decide on forwarding a mission of limited police force to Albania in order to assist the state in its efforts to restore order.

    [09] GERMANY LINKS CYPRUS' ACCESSION TO THE EU WITH GREEK-TURKISH RELATIONS

    Bonn, March 25 (MPA)

    The German government directly links Cyprus' accession to the European Union with the Greek-Turkish relations, according to the statements made by German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel who is currently on a formal visit to Ankara.

    In an interview to a German weekly, Mr. Kinkel stated that "without a decisive improvement on Greek-Turkish relations, Cyprus' accession to the EU is almost unthinkable," while he also added that "for matters of principle, Greece is worth our European solidarity."

    Referring to the Europeans' stance on Turkey's customs union with the Community, Mr. Kinkel stated that Turkey is rightfully deeply disappointed.
