    [01] GREEK INITIATIVE IN THE EU ON THE BALKANS

    Alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou will announce the Greek initiative for the support of the Balkan states in the EU Council of Ministers that will be held in Brussels tomorrow.

    Greece will suggest the holding of a meeting with the participation of the EU Foreign Ministers and their counterparts from the Balkan states to take place in Athens possibly in March.

    Kostas Karamanlis is a favourite for the New Democracy party Presidency among party voters.

    According to an opinion poll published today in a Sunday newspaper, 40,2% of the party voters want mr.Karamanlis for party President, while leading party member mr.Souflias got 36,7% and current party President mr.Evert, is a distant third.

    New Democracy party Vice-President mr.Ioannis Varvitsiotis mentioned that more party deputies and leading party members will back mr.Karamanlis' candidature.

    [03] GREECE WILL SUGGEST THE UPGRADING OF THE EU-TURKISH RELATIONS

    Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs mr.Yiannos Kranidiotis announced the undertaking of a Greek government initiative for the conditional upgrading of relations between the European Union and Turkey.

    He described as "welcomed" any US initiative for the defusing of the crisis in the Aegean for as long as the international law and treaties are taken under consideration.

    On the issue of the name that will be used by FYROM, he stated that he prefers any other name than "Republic of Macedonia".

    [04] THE CRISIS IN THE SECONDARY EDUCATION CONTINUES IN GREECE

    The strike of the secondary school teachers will continue for a sixth consecutive week, while the main teachers union in a press conference it gave today it had stressed that it expects a substantial proposal from the government for the resumption of a dialogue aimed at the solution of institutional and economic problems.

    A few hours later, in a press conference by Minister of Education Gerasimos Arsenis and Undersecretary of Finance mr.Christodoulakis were reiterated the government's positions regarding the teachers' wages strongly disputed by the teachers' unions.

    On the institutional issues, mr.Arsenis stated that the government is open to dialogue and added that due to the coincidence of views observed there is no reason for the strike to continue.

    The main treachers' union will meet tomorrow to decide on the suggestions it will make to the local teachers' unions expected to meet on Tuesday.

    A record number of people have visited daily the 14th Infacoma Exhibition on building materials which ended today. Yesterday, their number reached 9.416 and was increased by 43,5% compared to last year's exhibition.

    The exhibition had visitors from Cyprus, Bulgaria, FYROM, Italy Germany, Lebanon and the United States.

    [06] THE CYPRIOT PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT ON THE CYPRUS ISSUE DEVELOPMENTS

    Cypriot Parliament President Spyros Kyprianou said that Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides' statements on the developments in the Cyprus issue that are expected in May, concern either a direct American involvement in the Cyprus issue or a wider initiative that will have the support of the permanent UN Security Council members.

    The clarification was made by the President of the Cypriot Parliament in response to a comment made by a reporter according to which, the mobilization over the Cyprus problem is being postponed from one month to the next.

    Mr.Kyprianou stated that already a British initiative on Cyprus is in progress proven by the contacts of special envoy to Cyprus Sir David Hanney and by the new visit he is going to make to the island.

    The Cypriot Parliament President concluded that at this period the US are fully backing the British initiative and are in total coordination with London, while they are offering personal support to Sir David Hanney.

    The Turkish occupation forces in Cyprus will decide tomorrow whether they will release Greek-Cypriot Savvas Sidereniou.

    According to statements made by the Australian police of the UN peace- keeping force in Cyprus, Sidereniou is being held in the so-called "central police station" in the Turkish occupied part of the Cypriot capital of Nicosia.

    [08] THE GREEK-BULGARIAN TRADE TRANSACTIONS REACHED 660 MILLION US DOLLARS IN 1996

    The trade transactions between Greece and Bulgaria reached 660 million US dollars in 1996 and for the first time since 1990 Bulgarian exports to Greece worthed 20 million more than the corresponding Greek exports to Bulgaria.

    Greece occupies the fifth place among foreign investors in Bulgaria with about 1.000 businesses operating in the country as well as three banks, namely the Chios Bank, the Ionian Bank and the National Bank of Greece.

    The Greek-Bulgarian joint business programmes that have become legalized in Greece are about 50 and concern mainly the sectors of agriculture, tourism and engine manufacturing.

    Those data were given to publicity during a press conference in Sofia by caretaker Undersecretary of Commerce and International Economic Cooperation mr.Minko Gerdzikov, who pointed out that for the first time this year there will be no seasonal restrictions imposed on the export of lamb meat from Bulgaria to Greece.

    According to mr.Gerdzikov, Bulgaria exported to Greece mainly timber, metals, fertilizers, meat, dairy products and glassware, while it imported from Greece light industry products, cotton, amiantus and cattle feed.

    [09] A BULGARIAN MUSLIM LEADER WILL VISIT TURKEY ON THE ISSUE OF THE IMMIGRANTS FROM BULGARIA

    The decision allegedly made by the Turkish government to deport from Turkey, starting on April 1st, the estimated 400 thousand muslim immigrants who came from Bulgaria after 1993 and have no residence permits has alarmed the muslims in Bulgaria.

    Leader of the muslim Movement for Rights and Freedoms in Bulgaria mr.Ahmet Dogan stated today to the Bulgarian state radio that he will visit Turkey in the next few days and will discuss the issue possibly at a government level.

    Mr.Dogan stated that everything possible will be done for this problem to be resolved favourably for the muslim immigrants from Bulgaria in order to be able to stay in Turkey.

    The Sofia newspaper "Standart", had warned that a new tragedy will unfold in the Balkans if this decision is put into force, pointing out that due to the grave economic crisis it is going through Bulgaria will not be in a position to accept back such a large number of people.

    [10] THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES DECIDED THE FORMING OF A NETWORK OF REGIONS OF MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

    The establishment of a network of regions of Mediterranean countries was decided in the International Center for Mediterranean Studies meeting that was held in Cyprus during the weekend, chaired by Cypriot Minister of Education and Culture ms.Kleri Angelidou.

    The network's permanent Secretariat for economic, cultural and scientific cooperation will be based in the south-eastern Aegean island of Rhodes, while the network's department that will deal with policy, security, peace and cooperation in Mediterranean, at a non governmental organizations level, will meet in Nicosia.

    Also, it was confirmed the holding of regular meetings of representatives from all the Mediterranean countries under the title: "Mediterranean Days: Peace, Development, Culture", as well as the International Center's cooperation with the Forum of Mediterranean countries in which participate Greece, Algeria, Egypt, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Maroco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey. Finally, it was decided the holding of a conference under the title "Effect and Contribution of religions to the cultural development of the Mediterranean countries".
