    [01] THE CYPRIOT PRESIDENT PRESENTED MONEY CHEQUES TO THE RELATIVES OF THE GREEKS KILLED OR MISSING IN CYPRUS

    Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides, who is visiting Athens, presented money cheques to the relatives of the Greek army officers killed or missing in Cyprus.

    Mr.Clerides thanked the Greeks who were killed in the battlefield of honour and stressed that the Cypriot people will always remember their sacrifice.

    Tomorrow, mr.Clerides will leave for a formal visit to India where he will meet with the country's President and Prime Minister.

    [02] CLINTON EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER CYPRUS' PURCHASE OF THE RUSSIAN MISSILES AND ANKARA'S THREATS FOR MILITARY ACTION

    US President Bill Clinton in his bimonthly report on Cyprus that was sent to the US Congress, expressed concern over Cyprus' purchase of the Russian S-300 missiles and also over Ankara's threats for military action against the island.

    The US President reiterated his commitment toward the solution of the Cyprus problem and maintained that the United States are ready to play an upgraded role aimed at promoting a solution. He added that for an initiative to be successful the interested parties must agree on steps that will limit the tension and will make direct talks possible.

    Mr.Clinton also expressed his disappointment over the failure of the UN efforts for an agreement on measures that will limit the likelihood of further violence along the buffer zone in Cyprus.

    [03] NEW RALLY WAS HELD BY THE FARMERS IN THESSALY AT THE VOLOS-FARSALA NATIONAL ROAD

    Farsala 8 February (MPA)

    New rally was held today by the farmers in Thessaly at the Volos-Farsala national road in the road junction of Mikrothives. The farmers withdrew yesterday from the roadblocks while they demanded that police forces withdraw from the region of Mikrothives to be able to fix their tractors' tyres that were destroyed in a police operation.

    Meanwhile, 22 government ministers will visit an equal number of rural prefectures during the weekend to present the government's positions on the farmers' issue.

    [04] THE SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS WILL CONTINUE THEIR STRIKE

    The mobilizations of the secondary school teachers will enter their fourth week on Monday, while on Sunday a delegation of teachers will go to Thessaly in a show of support for the farmers.

    On Monday, the secondary school teachers will hold a rally in front of the Education Ministry building, while the elementary school teachers will decide today if they will continue their strike.

    [05] INFLATION IN GREECE DROPPED TO 6,8% IN JANUARY

    Inflation dropped to 6,8% in the month of January, reaching the lowest level of the last 25 years.

    Already, the National Bank of Greece announced that interest rates in savings accounts and bank loans will be decreased by 0,25% while similar decreases will be made next week by other banks.

    [06] THE ALBANIAN GOVERNMENT BANNED AN OPPOSITION DEMONSTRATION

    The Albanian government banned the opposition demonstration scheduled for today. The opposition had called on the Albanians cheated by get-rich-quick schemes to be inspired by the demonstrations in Bulgaria and Serbia.

    The Interior Ministry in a statement described the scheduled march as a threat for the country's security and stressed that the violators will be punished according to the penal code.

    [07] THE TURKISH REPUBLICAN PARTY WILL SUBMIT A CENSURE MOTION ON THE ISLAMIST GOVERNMENT

    Turkish Republican party leader Denis Baykal in an interview published in the Turkish newspaper "Milliyet" stated that his party will table a censure motion on the islamist government.

    Meanwhile, a censure motion has already been tabled by the Democratic Left party of Bulent Etsevit. Those moves by the opposition parties are being made on the occasion of the government's provocative proposals on the islamization of public life which caused the reaction of the Turkish military.

    [08] GREEK EURO-MP MR.PAPAKYRIAZIS MADE A QUESTION TO EURO-PARLIAMENT ON 2ND WORLD WAR CRIMINAL ALOIS BRUNNER

    Greek Euro-MP mr.Nikos Papakyriazis made a question to European Parliament on 2nd World War criminal Alois Brunner and on the measures that should be taken for his extradition from Syria where he is hiding under the alias "Doctor Fischer". Mr.Papakyriazis underlined the need for the Brunner case to be cleared up because justice has to be done to the thousands of victims of the nazi persecutions.

    According to mr.Papakyriazis, Germany hesitates to ask for Brunner's extradition, who is responsible for the holocaust of 50.000 Jews in Thessaloniki, while Syria denies that the war criminal is hiding in its territory, in spite of the evidence in the hands of the german and israeli secret services that prove the opposite.

    Brunner, who was an SS officer, is being wanted since 1945. He is wanted by the Interpol and the german authorities, while he has been sentenced to death twice in France for the massacre of 25.000 Jews, among them 200 children.

    [09] A CARGO SHIP UNDER CYPRIOT FLAG SANK OFF THE COASTS OF NORWAY

    Stavatzer 8 February (MPA)

    A Greek cargo ship under Cypriot flag, with a 20-member Polish crew sank this morning, 30 miles west of the port of Stavatzer in Norway due to bad weather conditions.

    According to rescue crews, no survivors have been found.
