[02] THE GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER IS IN PALERMO, ITALY TO ATTEND THE INFORMAL EU COUNCIL OF FOREIGN MINISTERSGreek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos is in Palermo, Italy to take part in the informal EU Council of Foreign Ministers.The Council examines issues concerning the Inter-Governmental Conference, the situation in the Middle East and in former Yugoslavia and also the relations of the European Union with Russia. [03] THE US STATE DEPARTMENT REPORT DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO WRITE THE HISTORY OF CYPRUS, SAID THE US AMBASSADORUS Ambassador to Cyprus Richard Bautcher expressed the view yesterday that the US State Department report on human rights constitutes a honest presentation of facts from different countries and does not attempt to write the history of Cyprus.To the observation that the refugees and the turkish occupation are not history but reality, mr.Bautcher said that he is aware of that, adding that simply this part of the Cyprus problem is not included in the report. The Cypriot government will make remarks to the US State Department on the content of the report. [04] GREEK-CYPRIOT PRISONERS OF WAR ARE BEING HELD IN TURKISH PRISONS SINCE THE 1974 INVASION OF CYPRUSGreek-Cypriots missing since the turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 are being held in army camps, in high security prisons and in mines in the depths of Turkey according to a top secret document of the Cypriot Secret Service, based on a report published by the cypriot weekly magazine "Selides".The top secret documents include testimonies by turkish army officers, police officers and political prisoners which in combination with official turkish evidence contradict Rauf Denktash who stated a few days ago that all the prisoners of war captured in 1974 have been executed by turkish-cypriots. The fact that in 1974 a large number of prisoners were taken to Turkey and never returned to Cyprus is proved and by official turkish documents and also by a statement made by the then Prime Minister of Turkey Bulend Etsevit. He had stated that on the day of the invasion 783 prisoners of war from Cyprus had been transported to prisons in Adana. Later, the turkish government had issued a list of 385 prisoners of war to the International Red Cross. |
