The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe decided today that FYROM should be admitted in the Organization under the name it was admitted in all international organizations, that is FYROM.
The admission was unanimous despite the efforts by the FYROM deligation that they should be accepted as the "republic of Macedonia"
Yesterday, the Council's legal committee had rejected the proposal for the neighbouring country's accession under the name "Republic of Macedonia" stressing that it can only be accepted under the name "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia".
Meanwhile, FYROM President Gligorov's office characterized as "groundless" the greek government's protest memorandum addressed to international mediator Cyrus Vance in which is underlined that the FYROM President signs as "President of the Republic of Macedonia" in the messages he has sent to the greek President and the Prime Minister on the occassion of the New York agreement signed by Athens and Scopje.
It should be reminded that professor Krateros Ioannou, Greece's legal advisor in the New York talks, had stated to M.P.A. that the negotiations for the name are an obligation stemming from the agreement signed in New York.
Greece and SAlbania will crosscheck their numbers copncerning the greek minority school students in Albania so that an agreement is reached on the issue as it was announced today after the meeting the Foreign Ministers of the two countries, mr Carolos Papoulias of Greece and Alfred Serequi of Albania had in New York.
Mr Papoulias said that the issue of the minority scholls is first and urgent priority for Greece before the school year starts while he included in the negotiations the issue the Albanian temporary workers in Greece.
Greek Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris expressed today the disapproval of the Greek government of the photographs of the Prime Minister's wife and director of his personal bureau ms Demetra Liani-Papandreou daily Avriani has been publishing for days. Mr Hitiris called for the isolation of such journalism and stressed that such efforts for attacks against the government, the Prime Minister, and ms Liani had also taken place unsuccesfully in 1989.
Minister of State mr Antonis Livanis, who has been for many years one of the closest political and personal freinds of the Prime Minister's called that everybody should look deep inside themselves so that the reasons for such situations are interpreted.
Mr Tilemahos Hitiris repeated today that there is no problem with the health of Mr Papandreou's after the food poisoning he suffered from yesterday.
Greek Foreign Minister mr Carolos Papoulias had a 30minute meeting with his counterpart from New Yugoslavia Milan Milutinovic yesterday in New York and discussed the crisis in Bosnia.
In statements he made after the meeting mr.Papoulias said that a great effort is being made for the progress of the peace process and for an agreement on a cease-fire adding that many hopes have been created, while referring to the US factor he said that is playing a decisive role. Mr.Papoulias also expressed the hope that in the next few days there will be an agreement on a ceasefire.
The greek Foreign Minister referred and to Russia's important role adding that it has not been decided yet whether the forces it might send in Bosnia will be under the NATO command or they will be under a separate command.
From his part, Foreign Minister of New Yugoslavia mr.Milutinovic praised Greece's role in the peace efforts for former Yugoslavia. He said characteristically that Greece is vindicated because now everyone supports its positions concerning what had to be done for peace in the region.
Referring to the agreement achieved in New York, mr.Milutinovic stressed that it was a significant day and a vindication from every aspect of the existence of the Republic of Serbia. According to New Yugoslavia's Foreign Minister, the next step will be the signing of a general ceasefire agreement that will be in effect all over Bosnia and not just in the city of Sarajevo. He also said that if everything goes well the final meeting will be possible to be held after 2 or 3 weeks.
The European Commission with its response to greek Euro-deputy's question gave a legal end to the argument used by Germany, according to which, the country's war indemnities to Greece have been writen off as a result of the two countries' economic transactions through the European Union.
The European Commission responding to the question by greek Euro-deputy Alekos Alavanos, who asked for a ruling on whether the german argument is in accordance with the European Union conventions, underlined that the financing received by the EU member-states in the framework of the EU community policy comes from the European Union budget and not from any member-state.
The European Commission's response makes it clear that Germany's argument is groundless.
Turkish warplanes observing the cypriot military exercise under the code-name "Nikiforos '95" violated Cyprus' air-space. The information was confirmed this morning by cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis before the military parade that took place in the city of Larnaca.
President Kliridis stated that protests against the violations by the turkish warplanes will be made in international organizations while he clarified that there was no effort to intercept them.
The Greek Automobile Industry (E=8A=81=8E) expressed optimism that in 1997 will be able to enter the Stock Exchange based on its very positive course this year and on the even more favourable prospects for 1996. Already, in the first 9 months of 1995 the company's net profit was 750 million drachmas while by the end of December is expected to be over 1 billion drachmas.
The company's gross profit is expected to be 30 billion drachmas by the end of the fiscal year while in 1996 is expected to be 40 billion drachmas. Also, the company aims at expanding its production, expected to be absorbed by the private sector, from 15% this year to 35% in 1996.
As it was announced by the company, is very close to securing the production of buses for Eastern and Central European countries, Syria, China, United Arab Emirates, the Ivory Coast and Singapore.
