[01] FOREIGN MINISTER BRIEFED OPPOSITION PARTY LEADER
Foreign Minister mr Carolos Papoulias met today with the
leader of the main opposition party "New Democracy", mr
Miltiadis Evert and briefed him on the developments
concerning the relations between Athens and Scopje.
After the meeting mr. Papoulias stated that the greek
government resumes the negotiations from the basis that
Greece does not accept the use of the term "Macedonia" as
a name for FYROM, adding that "we have in front of us a
laborious negotiation and I can not anticipate its
outcome".
Responding to the question if there will be a timetable
for the negotiations on the issue of the name he said
that the first goal is the signing of the agreement on
the "small package" and later there will be a parallel
negotiation on the name.
By the term "small package" it is meant that a possible
bilateral deal will cover the issues of the flag and the
settlements in the constitution of FYROM but not its
name.
Mr.Papoulias said the agreement that will be signed in
New York will make possible a mutual recognition of the
two countries, while when he was asked if in the "small
package" will be included and the minority issue raised
by the FYROM side. he replied that "there are no issues
of minority".
A spokesman for the main opposition party of New
Democracy said that mr Evert expressed his disapproval of
any eventuality that the name of FYROM is not included in
the negotiations stressing that this will leave open the
recognition of FYROM as the republic of Macedonia".
After the meeting mr Papoulias had said that the leader
of the opposition expressed to him his reservations on
the exclusion of the name from the agenda of the
negotiations.
Meanwhile, greek Press and Media Minister mr Evangelos
Venizelos reiterated the firm position of the government
stressing that it has not changed and that Greece will
not recognize Scopje under the name "Macedonia" or any of
its derivatives.
Referring to a possible agreement with Scopje in New
York, mr.Venizelos said that this is a preliminary phase
and if all the issues are settled then the signing of an
agreement is very possible.
US Undersecretary of State mr Richard Hawlbrooke who
contibuted most in the bilateral agreement for
negotiations, in an interview with the Reuters, said the
agreement is a good sogn for a end to the conflict in all
former Yugoslavia.
German Foreign Minister Mr Claus Kinkel who hailed the
announcement for the announcement characterized his
contibution in the finding of a solution vital.
Most of the European dailies cover the prospective of the
negotiations in extend stressing the role the US
diplomacy played.
Dutch European Commissioner responsible for EU's foreign
relations, mr.Hans Van Den Broek expressed satisfaction
"for the announcement concerning the upcoming signing of
an agreement between Greece and FYROM" which according to
his statement "will be a valuable contribution to the
security and stability in the region".
Mr.Van Den Broek congratulated all parties for their will
to overcome their dispute and to resolve their
differencies.
Meanwhile, a representative of the European Commission
clarified that when the agreement between Greece and
FYROM will be signed the EU Commission will reexamine its
position regarding its appeal to the European Court of
Justice on the issue of the greek measures against FYROM.
[02] GORBACHEV CONTINUED CONTACTS IN ATHENS
Last once Soviet Union president mr Michail Gorbachev
continued today his contacts in Athens meeting the Prime
Minister Papandreou, the Secretary of the Central
Committee of the governmental PASOK mr Akis
Tsohadjopoulos and the President of the Coalition of the
Left mr Nikos Constantopoulos with whom he discussed all
recent developments in Europe.
[03] PRIME MINISTER IN THESSALONIKI
Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou will arrive in
Thessaloniki tomorrow where he will open the
manifestations of the 60th International fair of the
city.
Traditionally during the speech the Prime Minister makes
at the opening, he announces the economic policy the
government will follow in the following year.
Mr Papandreou is accompanied by a large number of members
of the cabinet who announce measures regarding their
sector.
[04] RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER IN THESSALONIKI
Russian Foreign Minister mr Andrei Kozirev is expected in
Thessaloniki on Friday morning accompanied by a large
deligation.
Mr Kozirev will have talks with greek prime minister mr
Andreas Papandreou as well as the foreign minister mr
Carolos Papoulias and the minister for Macedonia - Thrace
mr Constantinos Triaridis.
It is to be noted that mr Kozirev will arrive in
Thessaloniki from Sofia where he will have talks with the
Bulgarian political leadership on all bilateral issues
including the oil pipeline which will bring Russian oil
from the Bulgarian port of Burgas in the Black Sea to the
Greek port of Alexandroupolis in the Aegean Sea.
[05] AUSTRALIAN VICTORIA STATE PRIME MINISTER IN THESSALONIKI
Australian Federal State of Victoria Prime Minister mr
Jeff Kenet will visit officially Thessaloniki on Friday
so that he attends the opening ceremony of the 60th
international fair of the city.
During his stay in Thesslaoniki mr Kenett will meet his
Greek counterpart and the Cypriot President mr Glafkos
Klridis who will also be in Thessaloniki.
[06] EX-MINISTER RESIGNS FROM PASOK CENTRAL COMMITTEE
Ex-Minister mr Theodoros Pangalos announced today his
resignation from the Central Committee of the
governmental PASOK where he was elected first at the 1994
congress.In a statement he made Mr Pangalos said that
there are very grave responsibilities in the leadership
of the party.
