[01] FOREIGN MINISTERS OF GREECE AND FYROM TO MEET IN N.YORK
Foreign Ministers of Greece mr Carolos Papoulias and
FYROM mr Stevo Crvenkovski will meet in New York next
week to approve of an agreement which has already
advanced after the initiative by the United States
Undersecretary of State mr Richard Hawlbrooke.
The announcement was made simultaneously late yesterday
evening by the US government officials at Athens, Scopje
and Washington, after mr Holbrooke finalised a tour in
both capitals meeting Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou
in Athens and President Gligorov in Scopje.
In a message he sent late last night to Greek Prime
Minister and FYROM President, US President Clinton hailed
the desicion made by the two leaders to send their
Foreign Ministers for talks in New York and characterized
it as courageous and visionary, expressing the view that
this meeting will encourage the leaders of Bosnia,
Croatia and Serbia to make positive steps towards peace.
In Athens President of the Hellenic Republic mr
Constantinos Stephanopoulos stated that the rapid
developments in the Athens - Scopje relations were
expected, interesting and positive.
Greek Press and Media Minister mr Evangelos Venizelos
reiterated the greek position according to which Athens
is ready to lift the measures against Skopje as soon as
FYROM makes an obvious move on the issue concerning the
change of its flag and Constitution while he
characterized as very important the decision for the
resumption of the dialogue in New York.
Mr.Venizelos expressed satisfaction for the fact that mr.
Gligorov made a responsible move of an international-
political importance and contradicted that the United
States applied no pressure on Greece.
Regarding the issue of the name of the neighbouring
country, the Greek Minister pointed out that is still
pending and clarified that the greek government had never
linked it with the economic countermeasures against
Skopje.
Mr.Venizelos said that Greece enters the dialogue with
the measures still in force and there will be a change on
this issue only if Scopje makes a concrete and tangible
move.
Ministers of National Defense mr Yerassimos Arsenis and
of Interior affairs mr Constantinos Scandalidis, both
members of the governmental PASOK executive bureau
expressed their satisfaction for the development while
two ex-ministers and members of the Central committee of
the party, ex-Alternate Foreign Minister mr Yannis Kapsis
and ex-Public Order Minister mr Stelios Papathemelis
expressed reservations on the effectiveness of the
decision for the dialogue.
Main opposition party of New Democracy President mr
Miltiades Evert from Paris where he is that he supports a
solution within the United Nations.
Preisdent of the main opposition party of Political
Spring accused both the government and the opposition for
not supporting the national interests while the Communist
Party said that he did not disagree with the dialogue he
expressed objections for the fact that it obeyed to an
intiative by the United States.
President of the Coalition of the Left mr Nikos
Constantopoulos accused the government of exercising
secret diplomacy.
Ex-Prime Minister mr Constantinos Mitsotakis who was in
office when the Yugoslavia was dissolved in 1991 and when
Athens and Scopje reached an agreement in May 1993
expresed the view that after the recent developments,
FYROM will be called all over the world "Macedonia".
Mr Mitsotakis's foreign minister that time, now
independent MP mr Michalis Papakosntantinou said that teh
negotiations should not start for nihil basis but from
the point where they stopped in May 93.
[02] GREEK GOVERNMENT EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER DEVELOPMENTS IN BOSNA
Greek National Defense Minister mr Yerassimos Arsenis
expessed the deep concern Athens for the developments in
Bosnia.Mr Arsenis stressed that a lot of efforts from
many sides,a mong which Athens are on the way for the
change of the conditions in the area.
Meanwhile, a road-assistance company manager, 47-year-old
mr Dimitris Hatzopoulos, received a one-year prison
sentence by a court in Thessaloniki, for violating the UN
embargo against New Yugoslavia.
The company, represented by the accused, had bought a
helicopter from Montenegro two years ago in order to
cover its needs.The helicopter had been bought on August
20th, 1993 and the purchase papers presented were showing
that it came from France. This allegation later was
overturned when it was proven by the Special
Investigations Customs Agency that the helicopter came
from Montenegro and a french company had mediated for its
purchase.
[03] THE EU AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER WILL VISIT GREECE.
EU Agriculture Commissioner Frantz Fishler will arrive
for a formal visit to Greece on Thursday, September 7th.
The EU official will meet with Agriculture Minister
Giorgos Moraitis and with Undersecretary of Foreign
Affairs mr.Mangakis while he will visit Thessaloniki's
60th International Trade Fair which opens on Friday,
September 8th.
The EU official will also visit the monastic community in
Mount Athos, Chalkidiki accompanied by the Minister of
Agriculture.
[04] TURKISH-CYPRIOTS ARRESTED TWO GREEK-CYPRIOTS WORKING FOR THE UN
Two greek-cypriots belonging to the civilian personel of
the UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus were arrested
yesterday by the turkish occupation forces and UN
officials are trying to win their release.
The two greek-cypriots, Giorgos Paraskevas 39 and Solon
Kiprianou 50 yearsold were arrested in the turkish
occupied region of Morfou while they were on a UN
mission.
According to the press spokesman of the UN peacekeeping
forces Charles Golkin, the two men entered the occupied
territory in order to spray for insects in the outpost of
the argentinian peacekeepers. Turkish soldiers arrested
them after they finished their job and they took them to
the so-called "police station" in Morfou where they are
still being held.
[05] FINANCIAL SUPPORT BY GREEK AUSTRALIANS FOR EXCAVATIONS IN VERGINA
The greek community of South Australia offered 25
thousand australian dollars for the economic support of
the archaeological excavations in Vergina in the
framework of the "Vergina Plan" that was hammered out
after an initiative by australian Parliamentary Secretary
assisting the Premier in Multicultural & Ethnic Affairs
and Trade Development, Julian F. Stefani.
The money will be received by Minister of Macedonia-
Thrace Konstantinos Triaridis during his visit to
Australia in November that will take place after an
invitation by the Pan-Macedonian Association.
Mr.Stefani, who was the instigator of the plan for the
economic support of the excavations in Vergina, is
visiting Thessaloniki since last Friday and today met
with Minister of Macedonia-Thrace mr.Triaridis and
conveyed to him a formal invitation by Prime Minister of
South Australia to visit this state in November.
Mr.Stefani said to M.P.A. regarding the prospects for the
development of the economic relations between Greece and
Australia that Greece can become for Australia the
gateway to the markets of Central and Eastern Europe and
to the European Union. He also pointed out that Australia
is very lucky to have a large greek community very active
in the business sector.
