    [A01] PRESIDENT OF THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC FINALISES TOUR IN AEGEAN SEA

    President of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos finalised today his four-day tour in the islands of the Aegean Sea during which he visited the islands of Hios, Lesvos, Samos, Lemnos in the East Aegean Sea. Mr Stephanopoulos is the first ever president of the Greek state to visit the Island of Agios Efstratios, a small fishers' island which was used as a place for exile of political prisoners during the mid-war era and after the greek civil war. Addressing the few turkish citizens of Greek origin who still live in the nearby islands of Imvros and Tenedos given to Turkey with the settlements of the Lozannes treaties, mr Stephanopoulos apologised for all those actions which the greek state could have taken but did not take. The president of the Hellenic Republic called once more on Ankara to respect international laws and abandon the unacceptable petitions against Greece so that the friendly relations between Greece and Turkey be restored and Turkey be incorporated in the European Union. In Athens the Press and Media Minister in Athens mr Evangelos Venizelos characterised the tour mr Stephanopoulos made as very important and stressed that the president is the symbol of unity for Greece. Asked why there mr Stephanopoulos was accompanied by only one minister, the minister for the Aegean Sea mr Antonis Kotsakas, mr Venizelos underscored that mr Kotsakas is the responsible minister and stressed that the President of the Republic is not the means for the promotion of the governmental work. It is to be noted that a part of the Turkish Press, especially the daily "Sabah" which has a very high circulation, responded to what mr Stephanopoulos said in a very friendly way.Another daily describes the greek president speeches as "advice of peace".

    [A02] US PRESIDENTIAL ADVISOR IN ATHENS

    The US President advisor, mr. George Stephanopoulos, who is of Greek orogin arrived in Athens this afternoon for an official visit during which he he will be received by Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou, Foreign Minister mr Carolos Papoulias, and National Defense Minister mr Yerassimos Arsenis, the president of the main opposition party of New Democracy mr Miltiadis Evert and Archbishop of North and South America, mr Iakovos. In a statement he made after his arrival in the airport of Athens mr Stephanopoulos expressed his satisfaction for being in Greece stressing that it has been a long time since he last visited the land of his grandfather and his father. The US presidential advisor said he was looking forward to meeting the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Defense as well as the opposition leader expressing the hope that his visit will be contstuctive. Mr Stephanopoulos was received in the airport by the United States ambassador in Athens mr Tomas Niles and a deligation from the small greek village his family comes from, which as he said gave him great happiness. Last night in Cyprus the US Presidential advisor reiterated the american President's strong interest for the solution of the Cyprus problem and affirmed that the US government will continue to work towards this direction. Speaking in Nicosia mr.Stephanopoulos stated that he learned a lot during his visit in Cyprus and that he will submit a full report to the US President. The US Presidential advisor praised President Clinton's firm position on the Cyprus problem and reminded that he was the one who characterized the existing "status quo" as unacceptable by saying that 21 years was a long time for this issue to remain pending while he also had declared that the problem must be resolved and that he will continue to work towards this direction. Mr.Stephanopoulos also expressed the wish that soon the dream of a free Cyprus will become a reality.

    [A03] GRECOBULGARIAN COOPERATION FOR THE 1997 CULTURAL CAPITAL

    The participation of Bulgaria in the events that will take place in Thessaloniki, which will be the Cultural Capital of Europe in 1997, was the main issue discussed in the meeting between thr Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, mr Konstantinos Triaridis with bulgarian Culture Minister, mr Gheorghi Kostov. Mr.Triaridis stated that Bulgaria showed a strong interest for cooperation not only in the economic sector but in the sector of culture as well, on the occassion of Thessaloniki being the Cultural Capital of Europe in 1997. He said that the two countries will try jointly to make the Balkan culture known to the rest of Europe. The Bulgarian Culture Minister characterized as important the meeting with mr.Triaridis while said that he called for the greek Minister's support for the participation of Bulgaria in events that will take place in Europe. The two Ministers also discussed the establishment of greek cultural centers in Bulgaria and of bulgarian in Greece while mr.Kostov invited mr.Triaridis to visit Bulgaria. Later the Bulgarian Minister visited the headquarters of the organization which prepares the 1997 activities where he met the executive council with whom they examined the prospectives and suggestions for the cooperation for 1997.

    [A04] OVER 5 THOUSAND SUES AGAINST THE GERMAN STATE FOR WAR RETRIEVALS

    Thousands of World War II victims are suing the german state for damages asking for compensations for their personal suffering or for the execution of relatives and also for the destruction of their property during the german occupation over Greece (1941-44). The deadline for the filing of law suits will end on September 12th and is expected that they will be over 5 thousand sues as central and north west Greece had been completely destroyed by the german occupation forces in the period of 1941-44. Law suits were filed collectively by Thessaloniki's Jews and by residents of villages like Chortiatis, Klisoura, Megala Livadia, Mesovuno, Nea Kerdilia, etc. that were completely destroyed and their residents were killed by the german occupation forces. The victims and their relatives are claiming compesations that in some cases reach 50 million drachmas. The jewish community has already filed 450 law suits corresponding to the number of jewish families that were left after the holocaust of the jewish community in Thessaloniki. In 1943 the nazis gathered the jews living in Thessaloniki and they sent them to concentration camps in Europe. Of the 56.000 jews living in Thessaloniki only 1.950 survived.

    [A05] GREEK PRIME MINISTER RECEIVED ARCHIBISHOP OF NORTH & SOUTH AMERICA.

    Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou received today Archbishop of North and South America, mr Iakovos with whom they discussed issues concerning the Greek national interest, the US-greek relations and the Athens-Scopje dispute. The Prime Minister in his statement characterized the Archbishop as a distinguished personality stressing that he continues to offer his support to the issues of greek national interest while the Archbishop thanked the government for its trust to the greeks living in the United States. Press and Media Minister mr Evangelos Venizelos said that mr Iakovos is a personality of prestige and added that Athens knows that he intends to resign in mid-1996. This afternoon Archibishop Iakovos met president of the main opposition party of new Democracy mr Miltiadis Evert.

    [A06] PRESIDENT OF OPPOSITION TO BE RECEIVED BY PRESIDENT CHRRAQUE

    Leader of the main opposition party of New Democracy mr.Miltiadis Evert will be received by President Chirraque of France in Paris on September 4th. In the meeting all open issues of regional interest will be discussed among which the latest developments in the Balkans, the greek positions and views on international issues and Turkey's stance towards Greece after the decision of the turkish Parliament to give Prime Minister Ciller the power to use military means in case Greece exercises its right to expand its territorial waters in the Aegean to 12 nautical miles.

    [A07] GOVERNMENT DESCRIBES PRIME MINISTER'S WIFE'S ACTIVITIES AS NATURAL

    The opening of an art gallery and the uncovering of a statue in her birthplace is activity which is natural for the wife of a Prime Minister said today Greek Press and Media Minister mr Evangelos Venizelos when asked about the presense of ms Demetra Liani - Papandreou in the manifestations "Prespes 95" which took place for a fifth successive year in Florina and take their name after the nearby lakes in the Greece-FYROM-Albania border. Such activities are natural for the wives of Prime Ministers all over Europe said mr Venizelos who added that the participation of a great number of MPs and ministers in these manifestations is a common phenomenon all these years. The Minister said that what should be noted is the presense and the participation in the manifestations and the dialogue about the new economic situation in the peninsula of six ministers from Balkan countries.

    [A08] A DUTCH YACHT DESTROYED BY FIRE NEAR THE ISLAND OF RHODES.

    Fire completely destroyed the dutch yacht "Barist" while it was sailing 5 miles north-east of the island of Rhodes in the south-eastern Aegean. The two dutch who were on the "Barist" were rescued by the fishing boat "Cleopatra" and were taken to Phodes Faliraki Port. The Port Authority in Rhodes has begun investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
