Subject: BRIEF GREEK NEWS BULLETIN (14/6/1995) Topic: mpa From: Macedonian Press Agency BRIEF GREEK NEWS BULLETIN BY MACEDONIAN PRESS AGENCY Thessaloniki, June 14 1995 SKOPJE:AN UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK AGAINST GHALI, BUSH AND NIMETZ An unprecedented and provocative attack with open accusations against UN Secretary General Boutros Ghali, US Presidential envoy Mathew Nimietz and former US President George Bush was launched by the pro-government skopjan newspaper "Nova Makedonia". According to the newspaper, the three officials are being bribed by the greek government in order to be biassed in the solution of the skopjan dispute. Also, it mentions that the large greek lobby is the one that applies pressures on the US policy and eventually affects the outcome of the negotiations. In a front page article under the headline "Greece buys off the negotiators" and the "greek lobby is giving away vacations" the newspaper "Nova Makedonia" mentions mr. Bush's visit in Greece, the upcoming award of the Onassis prize to UN Secretary General and mr.Nimits' unofficial private visit in Greece for vacations accusing them of being biassed while mr.Bush is characterized as "agent working for the promotion of the greek interests". The newspaper also adds that as a result of those visits none can trust the mediators' objectivity. Referring to the private visit of mr.Nimits in Greece the article wonders why he chose this country for his vacations among 180 countries and also who is going to pay the expenses of his stay adding that this creates questions, suspicions and speculations. Regarding UN Secretary General Boutros Ghali the newspaper writes in an ironic way that he will receive an award and 1 million dollars from the Onassis Foundation for his "special services" for the solution of the problems in the Mediterranean namely, the unsolved Cyprus problem, the unsolved skopjan issue and the unsolved problems in the greek-turkish relations. Former US President George Bush is characterized by the newspaper as an agent promoting the greek interests and maintains that he is attempting to contribute to the construction of an oil pipe-line from Russia to Greece by-passing FYROM in order for this country to remain dependent on Greece for its energy supply. BALKAN BANK CLERKS FEDERATIONS TO MEET IN THESSALONIKI Balkan meeting of bank employees will be held in Thessaloniki on June 15-16. It is the first time that this meeting is being held in Thessaloniki and representatives of the Federation of Greek Bank Employees Organizations and unionists from Albania, Bulgaria, New Yugoslavia, FYROM, Romania and Turkey will take part. The main topics in the agenda of the meeting will be the social and economic situation in the Balkan countries, the banking system, development, labour relations, training systems and also proposals for the cooperation, solidarity and peace in the Balkan region submitted by the unions participating in the meeting. STUDENTS FROM ALEXANDROUPOLIS IN THE 7TH EU COMPETITION The Technical Lycee of the northern greek city of Alexandroupolis will take part in the 7th EU Competition of Young Scientists to be held in September. A group of teachers and students came up with the ingenious invention of a device that measures the volume of liquids and traces adulterations in liquid fuel while it can also give information on the quantity and the density of the liquid fuel in the large reservoirs and at the loading points used by tankers. The invention will be presended in the competition by teachers Stavros Zois, Christos Papageorgiou and Dimitris Zoulas and by students Charalambos Karpouzis and Giorgos Kourtidis. BULGARIAN DELEGATION IN ATHENS TO PREPARE PRIME MINISTER VISIT. A bulgarian delegation headed by ambassador Costa Andreev, Director of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry Balkan Affairs Directorate arrived today in Athens in order to prepare the visit of bulgarian Prime Minister Jan Videnov in Athens. Prime Minister Videnov's visit will take place on June 19-20. The bulgarian delegation was expected to meet today in the Foreign Ministry with the corresponding greek delegation headed by ambassador Dimitris Kipreos. TURKISH PARLIAMENT SPEAKER ADMITTED HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS Austrian newspapers "Wiener Zeitung" and "Der Standard" mention that during the three-day visit of an austrian Parliament delegation in Turkey, Husametin Tsintoruk, President of the turkish Parliament, admitted that there are isolated cases of tortures and human rights violations in Turkey while he denied the existence of a kurdish problem in the country. Representative of Foreign Affairs Committee of the party of the Greens, Doris Kamerlander who participated in the Parliamentary delegation, called Austria to show greater interest in the issue of the kurds while she also asked the austrian Foreign Minister to call his turkish counterpart, Erdal Inonu to make the necessary steps that will lead to the removal of the so-called anti- terrorist articles from the country's Constitution and to the termination of the systematic human rights violations. The representative of the Greens also called Turkey to release the imprisoned Parliament deputies and to express its position on the issue of the autonomy of the kurds before the customs union with the EU takes place. GREEK SCIENTIST RECEIVE AN INTERNATIONAL AWARD Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro in a formal ceremony that will be held tomorrow in Rome's Palazo Corsini will honour greek professor Panagis Panagiotopoulos with the international award of Rome's Nationale Academia dei Lincei. The prize is accompanied by the sum of 4 million drachmas and is awarded every 5 years, after a recommendation by an international committee, for outstanding achievements in pure and applied mechanics and in pure physics. Prof. Panagis Panagiotopoulos was born in Thessaloniki in 1950 and in 1978 he became a professor of iron designs in the Polytechnic School of Thessaloniki's Aristotle University. In 1989 he was elected member of the Athens Academy and is also one of the seven greek scientists who are lifelong members of Academia Europea based in London.
