[03] M. Hrisohoidis Meets SEB Presidium

    Thursday, 21 October 2010 13:41

    View Comments

"The crisis not only closes businesses but also opens doors to new opportunities", said Development Minister M. Hrisohoidis after his meeting on Thursday with the board of Businesses & Industries Association (SEB)within the frame of his contacts with the business world for the formulation of new growth policy and stressed: "To dilemma default or growth, we respond growth". On his part, SEB president, Dimitris Dascalopoulos underlined: "We must create circumstances of intensive growth".

" The Crisis Opens Doors to New Opportunities"

"To the dilemma growth or default, our answer is dynamic growth, new job positions, extroversion and innovation", M. Hrisohoidis.

In his statements, Mr. Hrisohoidis stressed: "the crisis not only closes businesses but also opens doors to opportunities for faster exit from the crisis". But he also underlined the high importance of SEB as well as other business and market sectors participation for a change of climate.

Mr. Hrisohoidis described as useful and substantial his meeting with SEB presidium to whom he outlined the government's political priorities while SEB expounded the problems of the businesses.

"I can not solve the equation, when profit is 5% I can reduce prices by 30%", said SEB president Dimitris Daskalopoulos in response to Development Minister's suggestion for a 30% reduction in prices.

SEB president cited that 100% and not part of consumers' expenses should be examined, maintaining that largest part of their expenses are directly or indirectly determined by the state such as taxation, sales taxes and closed professions.

In response to difference in prices between Greece and other European countries, Mr. Daskalopoulos said that only competion could solve this issue and underlined that he referred to the business aspect while Development Minister spoke politically.

Furthermore Mr. Daskalopoulos said the country needs healthy businesses that meet their obligations, pay salries, taxes and social security contributions.

During their meeting they also discussed:

New developmental bill. SEB agrees with general outline but wants replacement of financial aid by tax reliefs.

Simplification of procedures for the setting up of busineses. Relevant draft-bill, being drawn with the cooperation experience of SEB members, will be tabled till the end of the year.

List of the 30 biggest obstacles to entrepreneurship, which should have been recorded till the end of the year according to the memorandum. SEB has already started preparing the list.

SEB asked for the Ministry of Regional Development and Competiveness to act as "representative" of businesses on issues beyond its competence such as city planning, taxation and others.

In his official statements, SEB president underlined that only creation of growth circumstances can save the country from bankruptcy and SEB is the natural ally in this effort.

In reference to Qatari investment in Astakos port, Mr. Daskalopoulos underlined that it is already known Greece is in the last position regarding attraction of investments.

The Prime-minister, in his Statements on Wednesday, ruled out any additional measures "whatever may arise", which was interpreted as a message not only to domestic recipients but also to Europe and troika. Specifically he placed the dilemma "we either carry out our effort or else waste our sacrifices", warning the EU Commission and Troika that Greek people have already made tough sacrifices. In the meantime, state deficit has dropped 30.9% in the 9-month period compared against the same period last year.

Deficit Dropped 30,9% in 9-month Period

State revenues rose 3.6% compared to same period last year, however, pace was down compared against annual target set to 8.7%.

    H. Staikuras Statement

"Final data on execution course of state budget in the first 9-month period reconfirm the ineffectiveness of the mixed economic policy followed" says ND deputy Hristos Staikuras.

Despite continuous revisions of fiscal targets, deviations continue to expand Mr. Staikuras added, underlining "the Government to cover deviations from "new" targets set for 2010 continue accounting acrobatics which weaken viability of fiscal adoption and shrink prospects for recovery".

In the meantime, Eurostat will release revised fiscal deficit data for the period 2006-2009 on November, 18 (after local administration elections and before submission of state budget).

Bernard Thibault, head of the CGT workers' confederation, said " there is no reason to end protests against pension reforms" , signaling new escalation of mobilizations next week. French unions are trying to keep people on the streets. Mr Thibault, in a radio interview, said: "The government remains intransigent. We need to continue with massive action as soon as next week... We will ask the unions for strong action that will allow people to stop work and go on to the streets".

On Tuesday, some 1.1 million to 3.5 million people took to the streets on a 6th day of nationwide mobilizations against government plans to raise retirement age from 60-62. Of 219 fuel depots, 14 are blocked. About a quarter of France's service stations had no fuel on Wednesday, and strikes also stopped work at two of France's three liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. Blockades of refineries and fuel depots have led to fuel shortages

In the southern port city of Marseille, there is no public transport, trains have been delayed or cancelled and the ports blockaded. The rubbish collectors' strike, now in its 10th day, and the nine-day rubbish collectors' strike means several thousand tonnes of refuse is piling up on the city's streets.

On Wednesday, the country began importing electricity as the wave of protest action took hold of energy supplies. At least 12 of France's 58 reactors were shut for maintenance, but the unions say production has been cut at four others.
