  • [01] Flooding along Evros River in Northern Greece

    Sunday, 14 February 2010 12:32

Tough times are ahead for the residents of the prefecture of Evros, in the northernmost tip of Greece, as the prefecture has been declared in a state of emergency since the early hours of Sunday, after several levees along Evros River breached.

The most serious problems have been reported in the villages of Pragi and Lagina. The local authorities are monitoring the water flow and are working on the measures to step up.

Speaking on NET television, Evros Prefect Nikolaos Zambounides said: "Several areas have flooded both in Greece and in Turkey, as the levees breached in the wake of a recent heavy shower. We are likely to evacuate the village of Pragi. Bulgaria is also taking measures to control the water flow."
