  • [01] Clashes between emigrants-police in Central Athens

Extensive incidents were reported in Omonia Square in central Athens this afternoon when emigrants clashed with police. Muslim emigrants started riots in the wake of an Iraqi man's claims that a police officer stepped on and tore a piece of paper he was carrying featuring religious verses in Arabic. Thousand of emigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and mainly from Asian countries along with a handful of Greek supporters from left-wing and immigrant rights groups fought with police outside the Parliament. Rocks rained in while police used tear gazes to disperse groups of stone-throwing protesters. Protestors headed to Parliament and tried to storm the building but were stopped by special police units (MAT).

It must be noted that on Thursday night, similar incidents broke out in Ag. Panteleimonos police department when a young Syrian was arrested after allegedly throwing a firebomb near the Aghios Panteleimonas police station, which is a neighborhood that according to residents there is criminality as gangs comprised of illegal immigrants and economic migrants are trigger incidents.

El.AS general headquarters announced that investigation on the case is in progress. The situation calmed at about six when the protestors scattered in small groups of 10-15 people. However, strong police forces remain in the area and are in constant alert for possible rekindles of the riots.
