  • [01] Karla to Become Lake again

Karla Lake in Magnisia prefecture that had drained in the 60s, will become a lake again by Spring 2010, turning to a water reservoir for the area and an important aquatic biotope. Karla with Girtoni dam, which is being constructed out of Larissa, will accept Pinios River waters that are pouring to the sea today, securing irrigation for 75,000 acres of land, as per Environment Minister George Souflias, who visited both projects today.

Mr Souflias stressed that his vision is for both projects to conclude, as the ministry's policy concerns the utilization of waters from Psikia dam at Acheloos River to Pinios River and through the Girtoni dam supplying Karla Lake with water.

He also pointed that Thessaly is lacking water resources. Regarding Karla, the minister announced the setting up of a body of managerial authority, Presided by former Magnisia Prefect Giannis Printzos. In relation to Girtoni dam, he appeared certain that the project would conclude within the first three months of 2010, adding that financing through national resources would continue normally.

The specific dam is an important environmental project of collecting water that will help Greece solve its serious irrigational problems encountered in the prefectures of Larisa and Magnisia. The Environment minister presided a meeting in the region of Thessaly.

[02] In View of European Elections

Tensions are running high among political parties in view of the European Elections. New Democracy (Conservatives) and PASOK's (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) list of candidates are expected to be announced by the end of the week. The meeting between Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and ND Central Committee Secretary Lefteris Zagoritis this morning focused on the European Elections. Mr Zagoritis announced that the PM ordered a Central Committee for the European Elections to be set up and meet at 17:30 Thursday at the party's headquarters.

Participating in the committee are the PM, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Dora Bakoyannis, V. Meimarakis, G. Souflias. G. Tragakis, F. Patrianakos, G. Papanikolaou, M. Daskalakis and L. Zagoritis. Meanwhile, the ND party is expected to announce the list of its candidates for the European Parliament in the next 24 hours.

In reply to a question whether top ministers are refusing to head the European list of candidates, Mr Zagoritis reported:

"Refuse to do what? Something that does not exist? The prime minister is responsible for the composition of the list of candidates. Thus, this means nobody can refuse. When the time comes, the decisions will be announced."

George Papandreou will announce PASOK's list of candidates on Saturday.
