[01] Germany in Mourning after School Shooting
Germany has been deeply shocked after the shooting spree at a school in
southwestern Germany in which fifteen people were killed by a teenager,
before taking his own life after a shootout with police. "This is a day
of mourning for the whole of Germany," said Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The German Press has termed the teen's motives as mysterious, since he
had attended the same school without causing any problems. Authorities
have focused their attention on the fact that the majority of the
victims were women, seven schoolgirls and three female teachers.
The Interior Minister of Baden-Wurttemberg stressed, however, that it
was too soon to jump to conclusions. He added that the attacker
probably chose his victims, shooting them in the head.
Dressed in black combats, the attacker entered the school at about
9:30am local time and opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding
several others within a few minutes. Eyewitnesses said he was pretty
calm and silent while shooting. He then killed an employee of a
neighbouring clinic, before fleeing the scene forcing a passer-by
driver to take him. The driver called the police who located the
attacker at a car exhibition, some 40km away. Two passer-bys were
killed in the final shootout between him and the police. The attacker's
father was a member of a gun club and had 18 guns.
