[01] PASOK Plan for âGreen Developmentâ
PASOK president G. Papandreou labeled "Green Development" as the only
exit from the financial crisis, maintaining that the present situation
reflects the end of an economic developmental model. G. Papandreou
presented the three top priorities of PASOK integrated program for
"Green Development" during a special event on Thursday in the presence
of EU Commissioner for Environment, Stavros Dimas, the president of
European Council for Renewable Sources of Energy, Arthuros Zerbos and
representatives from local administration and organizations.
In his speech, Mr. Papandreou stressed that the present crisis is
directly linked with the end of an economic model that promoted
development without guaranteeing viability and prosperity of our
society. The financial crisis gives us the opportunity to reverse a
developmental model that is fading away and go ahead with a development
that sets limits to the greediness of an anarchist market and focuses
on society and environment. It gives the opportunity to put an end to a
state-spectator which hands state assets to the greediness of
profiteers Mr. Papandreou said that green development means investments
and new job positions in sectors building the country's future from
construction to transport, tourism, agricultural products, clean
energy, new technologies and culture. Green development is the only
developmental option if the country wants to be competitive and viable
in an extremely difficult and challenging international environment.
Furthermore he stressed that green development is the only opportunity
for the disengagement from today's Greek state clientele planning into
green planning with participative energy production, participative
economy and participative democracy. On his part, EU Commissioner for
environment Stavros Dimas congratulated Mr. Papandreou for opening
dialogue on green development and stressed that patriotism and
environment go hand by hand. He also described Mr. Papandreou proposal
for the creation of Green Fund as particularly important. Three Top
Priorities First priority is climate and energy said Mr. Papandreou
with transition to an economy reducing gas emissions till 2020 and
disengagement from mineral fuels till 2050 through promotion of
renewable sources of energy with specific policies for reasonable use
of energy.
Second priority is placed on radical reorganization in all production
sectors, in agriculture, fishery, tourism, culture with transition
from the era of mass production, low quality and cost to the era of
quality. Third priority is placed on natural resources, forests,
natural reserves, waters and refuse as well as green infrastructures in
transport and state environment.
