    News

    The flow of Russian natural gas to Europe was halted again yesterday, with Moscow accusing the Ukraine of raising obstacles, instigated by the US. From its side, Kiev has described the conditions imposed by Russian Gazprom for the flow of natural gas unacceptable. Meanwhile, European countries are stepping up diplomatic pressure to Russia and the Ukraine. Bulgaria, Slovakia and Moldavia are sending their prime ministers to Moscow and Kieve, while the Polish president will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart. It total, 17 European countries are facing a serious problem, as the flow of natural gas has been halted or reduced. In a telephone conversation with Russian PM Vlaidimir Putin on Tuesday, Premier Costas Karamanlis hoped that Mr Putin would do everything feasible to settle the issue for good.

    Meanwhile, Serbian Public Power Corporation Srbijagas may sue Ukraine for obstructing the flow of Russian natural gas, stated its Manager Dusan Bajatovic.

    In Bulgaria, enterprises have suffered losses amounting to 101 million lev, due to the ensued problem with the flow of Russian natural gas from 6-13 January, stated Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.

    Official data show that 368 companies have been affected, while Bulgargaz is contact with Gazprom and the competent Ukrainian authorities.

    Fierce clashes between Israeli ground forces and Hamas fighters continue in the densely populated center of Gaza city while civilians are desperately seeking for refuge. In the meantime some 1.000 Palestinians have been killed and another 4.000 have been injured since the start of the Israeli military campaign against Gaza Strip while the death toll among the Israeli numbers 13 among them 3 civilians. UN Secretary General, Ban-Ki -moon today begins a tour of ME with first stop Cairo, where Egyptian negotiators are holding talks with Hamas on the on the French-Egyptian cease-fire proposal while the Israeli negotiator is also expected to arrive in Cairo.

    Demand for Cease-fire

    UN Secretary General starts a tour of ME today with first visit Cairo to discuss Egyptian cease-fire proposal with President Mubarack while he will next visit Israel and the West Bank. The aim of his visit is to demand implementation of recent UN resolution for cease-fire despite its rejection by Israel and Hamas.

    In the meantime, German federal police and Interior Ministry experts are to arrive in Egypt in the next days to assist Egyptian security services defend the country's borders with Gaza Strip. The destruction or closing of tunnels under Egyptian borders Hamas uses to smuggle weapons into Gaza is the basic Israeli demand for cease fire
