But the deal, a key condition for the resumption of Russian gas supplies to freezing Europe, must still be signed by Ukraine to come into force. Russian and EU officials approved it following Saturday's talks between Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and visiting Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the rotating European Union presidency. Putin says the written deal is necessary to control the flow of gas to Europe. Moscow has accused Ukraine of stealing Russian gas intended for Europe. Ukraine has hotly denied the claims. News item: 17568 [02] Anti-War DemonstrationsHundreds of Athenians marched towards the embassies of the USA and Israel to demonstrate their solidarity with the people of Palestine. Organized by the Alliance "Stop the War," and Greek trade unions, the rally was also joined by Palestinian and Arab organizations. With "Stop the Massacre in Gaza" being the key slogan, the demonstrators, with Palestinian families heading, chanted "Stop the war now." The march was not marred by any incidents, thanks to the tight security taken by the demonstrators themselves, who managed to push back some youths who tried to cause incidents.However, tensions ran high outside the US embassy, which was heavily guarded. The protestors hurled rocks at the policemen, chanting anti-US slogans. They then left the place after burning two US flags. The same scene was repeated outside Israel's embassy, where demonstrators blasted Israel for its ruthless holocaust policy at the expense of an innocent people. They lambasted Israel for genocide and escalation of violence against innocent people. They also accused the international community for being indifferent. A similar demonstration was held in Thessaloniki, central Greece. Palestinians living there, as well as activists and unionists, gathered at the statue of Venizelos. Waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans, they condemned the Israeli offensive in Gaza. They then marched towards the US and British consulates.
