[01] ETA Military Chief Arrested
French authorities arrested the suspected military chief of the Basque
separatist group ETA, Miguel De Garikoitz Aspiazu Rubina, 35, who goes
by the name "Txeroki", dealing the group a major blow. Spanish
newspaper "El Paiz" holds him responsible for "shattering hopes of a
peace settlement" referring to ETA murders in 2003 which led the
Socialist government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to
end its controversial dialogue with ETA.
He is believed to have murdered two Spanish police officers in France
on December, 1 said Michele Alliot-Marie, France's Interior Minister.
He was arrested with a woman, ETA member, in a Pyrenees town in
south-east France on Monday morning. Police found a gun, fake documents
and a computer in his apartment. Spain's two largest political parties
described his arrest as "excellent news". Spanish police believe
Txeroki, a hardliner who is believed to have taken over Eta's military
operations in late 2003, has been connected to all the major Eta
operations in the last five years. Txeroki's arrest demonstrates the
excellent collaboration of French and Spanish security forces in their
struggle against terrorism.
