The House of Representatives has finally approved Paulsons bailout plan with 263 votes to 171 today Friday. The same Body had rejected the plan in the first vote. Speaker Nancy Pelozi and the White House expressed their satisfaction over development. US President George Bush, who also hailed the approval of the plan, will sign the relevant bill in the next 24 hours. Thus, US$700 billion will flow to the American Banking system. The news on the approval of the bailout plan pushed Stock Markets up. However, profits in Wall Street were limited as investors appeared reserved due to the prospects of retardation of economic development.

Earlier, the General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange dropped by 0.85%, closing at 2,804.95 points. At the same time, the Commission hailed the approval of Paulsons plan.

The monetary crisis will be discussed at the meeting of the four most economically roubust EU countries, the Commissions Presidents and the European Central Bank in Paris on Saturday.

US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte arrived on an unannounced visit to Iraq on Friday, the US embassy in Baghdad said. Mr Negroponte will hold talks with Iraqi officials on the progress made in politics, economy and safety. There is no information available on the programme of his meetings. However, the visit is taking place during a period when Baghad and Washington are negotiating a deal for the American presence in Iraq after 2008. The so-called SOFA will decide on the future status of US troops after the end of 2008. Both sides still disagree on the US marine asylum in Iraq and the command of military operations.
