Thousands of primary and secondary school students crossed the doorstep of their schools on the premier of the new school year. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis along with Education Minister Evrypides Stylianides visited the 2nd Primary School in Peania to wish students a constructive school year. Everything is in place, assured Stylianides. The primary and the secondary school teachers unions, on the other hand, fear there will be vacancies and textbook shortages this year, as well. Socialist President George Papandreou will attend the opening day in the 2nd Primary School in Evkarpia, Thessaloniki.

    Christofias-Talat Talks Start

Talks between Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat open on Thursday. Among the issues to be touched on are those of governance and real estate distribution. The two sides have adopted a different approach to the origins of the federal state, which is to come into being after the Cyprus row is settled. Cypriot Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou argued that the preparations on the governance issue made so far have created a basis for dialogue. A lot of work, however, is still needed and there is a long way ahead, he added. Christofias vowed that no Cypriot citizen, including himself, has intention of sounding a retreat to the occupation forces. In the meantime, Athens and Nicosia are in contact, said the Greek Foreign Minister.
