The oppositions proposal to declare referendum that will decide on the Lisbon Treaty has not passed. Out of the 296 MPs who voted, 152 voted against and 144 in favour of the referendum. Former Prime Minister Coistas Simitis, PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) MPs Tonia Antoniou and Ilias Karanikas, as well as SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) MP Grigoris Psarianos abstained. The first two sent a letter to the presidium informing it that they were abroad, adding however that if they had been present they would vote for the referendum. KKE (Communist Party of Greece) Antonis Skyllakos described Irelands "No" a blow to the European Treaty and the EU in general.

On her part, Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis commented: "Greeces European prospect cannot and must not be questioned. The European construction should remain solid and it will as long as governments and parliaments claim their responsibilities and live up to expectations. When having the nations future in their hands, politicians should not opt for the alibi of a referendum."

In parallel, PASOK President George Papandreou stated that PASOKs proposal to declare a referendum proves that civilians are in the centre of the partys policy. In this way citizens are informed on developments that concern them.
