[01] New Round of Talks Agreed

The Chinese authorities and Dalai Lamas representatives decided to hold another round of talks, after their first meeting held Sunday in southern China. However, they did not set a specific date, said Xinhua. The Chinese officials reiterated Beijings positions, whereby Tibets spiritual leader has to halt the campaign for Tibets independence and stop sabotaging the Beijing Olympic Games.

[02] Rice Visits the Middle East

Washington still believes that a deal between Israel and Palestine could be brokered this year, said US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. "We continue to believe it is an achievable goal to have an agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis by the end of the year," Rice said after meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Rice described Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank as "particularly problematic" to efforts to establish a Palestinian state. At a news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, she also said she was pressing Israel to do more ease restrictions on Palestinian movement but also stressed that Palestinians needed to take further action to meet Israeli security demands.
