Passenger train 74 heading to Alexandropolis from Athens came off the tracks near Larissa prison at 12:15 leaving 28 people injured. Of those injured only five have remained at the Larissa University Hospital for treatment, however, they have not been seriously injured. Emergency crews rushed to the site of the accident to rescue passengers trapped inside the derailed train. In his statement to state television channel NET, Mr. Efstathiou, head of the National Health Operation Center said that one woman passenger suffered multiple injuries while twenty-three of those injured have already been discharged from hospital.

In the meantime, the restoration of the track has been completed. Interior undersecretary, Hristos Zois coordinated the whole operation. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash but initial estimations indicate that it was due to human error in the switching mechanism, leading the passenger train into a commercial train track.
