K.Papoulias: "No to Abuse of Power"

After being named Honorary Doctor of Laws, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, touched on the decay nourished by the abuse of power both in international and domestic relations. In his address, the President of the Republic stressed: "Nowadays, the concept of international law is neither absolute nor subjective. The existence or lack of international legality in the mission of an EU-sponsored force in Kosovo and in the recognition of its nascent independence is being debated. The ethics lying behind the legality of the preventive war doctrine is also being questioned. These examples manifest the relativity of the boundaries in the interpretation of international law and the conflict between power and justice."

Elsewhere in his speech, Papoulias noted: "The conflict between power and justice also lies behind the long-term and world phenomenon of corruption, whether it comes to black political money, or to transactions between the economical and political elites. When money power and interest subjugates the peoples representatives responsibility to defend its interests, the effort for a just and equal society is under threat."
