In his speech, Mr ElBaradei described nuclear weapons as "global catastrophe," and added: "If we hope to escape self-destruction, then I believe nuclear weapons should have no place in our collective conscience, and no role in our security." Querying, he said, "How do we create an environment in which all of us would look at nuclear weapons the way we look at slavery or genocide, as a taboo and a historical anomaly?" Egyptian ElBaradei and the IAEA shared the Nobel Prize on their efforts to prevent the expansion of nuclear weapons and advance the safe use of atomic energy. The Nobel Prize for IAEA was received by IAEA Board of Governors Chairman Yukiya Amano. Global Concern over Nuclear Weapons The Director of IAEA said that currently there are 27,000 nuclear warheads, a number which he described as "too many" and stressed the fact that six decades after the end of World War II, the nuclear nightmare continues to exist and referred to the global concern relating to Iran and North Koreas nuclear programmes, as well as the attempts of terrorists acquiring nuclear weapons. Moreover, he stated that the world is faced with "threats without borders," which cannot be countered with the creation of stronger weapons and armies, but through international cooperation. "The Nobel Peace Prize is a powerful message for the IAEA and myself," Mr ElBaradei said and explained: "The message is: endure in our efforts to work for security and development." The prize consists of a Nobel diploma, a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (around 1,150,000 euros) to be divided between the agency and its head. The Nobel Prizes are awarded on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobels death. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, while the rest of the awards in Stockholm, Sweden.
