The great escape of holidaymakers for the Easter weekend has been underway since yesterday. Traffic police are at the ready, especially at points along the national road network considered to be the most dangerous, while again today lorries over 1.5 tonnes are not permitted to travel between 3pm and 9pm. More than 2500 policemen are conducting surveillance all along the national road network, while the emergency measures will remain in force until the Sunday after Easter. In the meantime, transport leaving the city has sold out of tickets.

[02] In a Baghdad area Series of Bomb Attacks

At least 19 people have been killed and 71 injured in four bomb attacks in Baghdad, which aimed at members of the Iraqi security forces, one day after the approval of the new Iraqi government. The coordinated bomb attacks were made in the Sunni district of Athamiya, at 07:00 Greek time. According to the police, the number of victims is likely to increase. The target of the attack were Iraqi police and national guard patrol cars and a restaurant frequented by the security forces, in an area where there is intense activity by insurgent forces.

Evidence on letting real estate of the Patriarchy of Jerusalem is published today in the newspaper Maariv. In a full-page report under the title "Denials from Patriarch, Evidence is Clear", the newspaper publishes two contracts, which regard property let within the Old City of Jerusalem, while among the buildings let are the hotels Imperial and Petra. The contracts bear the signature of Nikolaos Papadimas, who was then the financial administrator for the Patriarchy, and provide for the buildings to be let for a time period of 198 years. The date of signing is 16 August 2004, which is one day before the signing of the Bethlehem contracts. In the photocopies of the contracts published in the newspaper, the bank account numbers are covered over, as well as the names of the lawyers who witnessed the agreement. Yesterday, Patriarch Eirinaios of Jerusalem denied all allegations against him. A swift reaction came from the Patriarchy of Jerusalem to the article in Maariv. In a statement, the Patriarchy speaks of "repugnant machinations" in the newspaper and calls on Palestinians and Orthodox Christians to turn their backs on them. He also underlines that he will resort to Justice.

[04] 6 Richter quake rocks Nias island Quake in Indonesia

A new strong earthquake measuring 6 points on the Richter scale rocked the island of Nias, off the western shores of Sumatra, in the early hours of this morning, according to local Media. The epicentre of the quake was in the Indian Ocean, at a depth of 33 km under the sea, at a 220-km distance south of the city of Melabo on Sumatra. So far there has been no information regarding victims or damage, although the inhabitants panicked, as the nightmarish memories of the disastrous 8.7 Richter quake on 28 March were reawakened. "It was quite a long quake. The lights in the donference room kept moving, and the buildings guards rushed to get out," stated the police administrator of the island of Nias to Andara news agency. At the time when the earthquake occurred, the police administrator was participating in a conference on dealing with the disaster caused by the March quake.
