In the Athens centre the military parade took place, attended by President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias. In his message, the President stated the need for unity, solidarity and a common vision for the counter of national issues and social challenges. "The Greek people, united and determined can better the present and ensure a new prospect for all," stated Prime Minister, Kostas Karamanlis. Earlier, from the White House a declaration by President, George W Bush for the anniversary for the National Independence Day was made, while he will host a special ceremony in the White House on Monday. Tonight, Mr Papoulias will attend a celebration ceremony, which will take place in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. "Today is a special and important day. We should rise up to the significance of the religious and national celebration," stated Archbishop Christodoulos adding, "The religious dimension of the celebration requires from all the reinforcement of faith with humility and devoutness." Translated by Eirene Nisiriou [02] Announced by the Leader of Opposition Presidential Elections in Kyrgyzstan25 Mar 2005 11:50:00By Anna Kourti Leader of opposition, Kurmanbek Bakiev announced in the PM assembly, that presidential elections will take place within three months, while he has been named acting President of the country. The whereabouts of President of Kyrgyzstan, Askar Akayev remain unknown. According to sources, Akayev, accompanied by his family, departed Kyrgyzstan by helicopter, headed to Kazakhstana. Opposition MP Timir Sarief stated "three people were killed in Bishkek, during Fridays protests." Russian President, Vladimir Putin condemned "the illegal way" which ended the crisis in Kyrgyzstan" adding that "I am ready to cooperate with the opposition." Mr Putin also stated that deposed President, Askar Akayev quite possibly will seek refuge in Russia. Russia-Kyrgyzstan Relations Also the Russian President stated "it is sad that that in a former USSR country the crisis was resolved in an illegal way, but we hope that in the future our relations will develop positively for the good of the two people." "We know the people of the opposition pretty well and they have done quite a lot to establish good relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan. For its part, Russia will do its best to keep up the current level of relations between the states and improve relations between the people," Mr Putin concluded. Translated by Eirene Nisiriou Related News: Parliament Sieged [03] Meeting Between Moliviatis and Rice "Excellent Relations"24 Mar 2005 23:44:00By Vagelis Theodorou In Washington, the meeting at the State Department, between Foreign Minister, Petros Moliviatis and his American counterpart, Condoleeza Rice took place in a warm climate. During the discussions the excellent relations between Greece and the U.S. were confirmed, while the two Ministers gave special emphasis on the strategic dialogue between Athens and Washington, on issues that concern Cyprus, the Balkans, Mediterranean and Caucasian countries. Speaking to journalists, Mr Moliviatis underlined the excellent relations between the two countries and made reference to the further advancement of the strategic cooperation. As he said, ways to promote the unification of Cyprus, based on the Annan plan were at the focus of the discussions. From her side Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice described Greece as its best ally in the Balkans. Cypriot Issue at the Focus In the meeting between Moliviatis and Rice, the latest developments in the Cypriot issue were discussed, in view of the Minister of Foreign Affairs meeting with UN General Secretary, Kofi Annan on Monday, March 28. On the agenda of the discussions, Mrs Rice spoke of a common commitment by the two countries in the expansion of democracy, making special reference to the Middle East, Afghanistan and the contribution in the Iraqs attempt for reorganization after the elections. On the question of the cooperation departments with Greece, the Secretary of State referred to the cooperation of the two countries in the context of NATO, Kosovo, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, where as she said the two countries share common interests. Mr Moliviatis will remain in the American capital and New York until March 28. Except for Mr Annan, he will meet with U.S. government officials, and also give an interview to CNN, while he will attend celebrations for the Greek Independence day on March 25.
