The discussion in the Parliamentary Plenary Session with the subject of "Health and Social Solidarity" has commenced and is attended by parties leaders, after a demand made by the Prime Minister, Kostas Karamanlis. In his speech, the Prime Minster stated, "The dispensation of medical and pharmaceutical care to all citizens, protection of public health and social solidarity are obligations by which the relationship between the government and the citizen is judged." President of PASOK, Giorgos Papandreou spoke of idleness, a lack of government plan and substitution of politics with communication tricks. The discussion is taking place a day after the voting of the Ministry of Health bill for the Greek National Health System (ESY), which was completed on Thursday, in Parliament.

This evening, the political and religious leadership of the country will give their congratulations to President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias. Prime Minister, Kostas Karamanlis, President of Parliament, Anna Psarouda-Benaki, Archbishop Christodoulos and leaders of the political parties will arrive at the Presidential Mansion at 17:00. Vehicles are not allowed to park or stop on Irodou Attikou Street and nearby streets from 12:00, while traffic will be banned from 15:30.

[03] Hierarchy Asks for Audits Press Articles About Eirinaios

Todays articles in Israeli newspapers that NET Radio 105.8 broadcast first, and state that Patriarch Eirinaios reportedly sold two hotels and a chain of stores belonging to the Patriarchate, has caused a reaction in the Holy Land. According to the articles the negotiator in the sales was fugitive and former financial manager of the Patriarch, Nikos Papadimas, to whom the Jerusalem Patriarch had given the relative letter of attorney. After this development, members of the Hierarchy, speaking exclusively to NET Radio 105.8, asked for the immediate intervention of the government and an audit by chartered accountants, in order to conclude if assets of the Jerusalem Patriarchate have been sold.

[04] Investigations Over Causes Explosion in a Tires Store in Patisia

A small explosion occurred at 3:50 in a tire and disc wheel store, at 350 Acharnon Street, in Patisia. Small damage was made to the shop front and a parked vehicle. The authorities have started an investigation in order to find the causes of the explosion.

[05] Abdullah Nasar al Arifi Surrendered Al Qaeda Member Arrested

A member of the terrorist network Al Qaeda was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, in Manila. 34-year-old Abdullah Nasar al Arifi, who was aboard a flight from Riyadh, surrendered to FBI agents, after a brief interrogation from the Philippines Police authorities. "The suspect was taken with a Continental Micronesia Airlines flight to the island of Guam," stated the Philippines immigration authorities. Al Arifi was included in the Al Qaeda wanted list compiled by the Philippines authorities, after information given by theU. S. Embassy in Manila.

[06] Eighteen Dead New Explosion in Coalmine

Eighteen people lost their lives after a gas explosion in a mine, in the province of Chongqing, in southwest China. The rescuers are still in search of a missing person. According to Xinhua news agency, 19 miners were trapped after the explosion that occurred around 15:00 on Friday. The investigations over the causes of the explosion are underway. It is noted that more than 6,000 people have been killed in accidents and explosions in Chinas coalmines.

[07] No Reports of Victims or Damage Strong Earthquake in Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook the province of Banda Aceh, in Indonesia today. There have been no reports of victims or damage. The underwater earthquake occurred at 6:20, local time, and its epicentre was located 91 km west of Banda Aceh, according to the National Geophysics Service. The earthquake lasted for one minute, causing panic to the inhabitants.

[08] Two Iraqis killed, 15 people injured Suicide Attack in Mosul

Two Iraqis were killed, and a further 15 people, including six American soldiers, were injured in an attack with a car packed with explosives on Thursday in Mosul, in northern Iraq. According to the American army, a suicide bomber drove the car, which was detonated. The condition of the American soldiers who were injured is considered stable, according to American military sources.

[09] Of Syrian Troops from Lebanon Annan Expects Full Withdrawal

Fred Eckhart, spokesperson of Kofi Annan stated that the UN General Secretary expects that Syria will have fully withdrawn its troops from Lebanon, before the elections in May for the emergence of a new government in Beirut. Kofi Annan expressed this view after his meeting with UN Special Coordinator, Terje Roed-Larsen, who held discussions in Beirut and Damascus for the redeployment of Syrian troops.

Mr Larsen stated, "The General Secretary stated that he expects the full withdrawal of Syrian troops and network of agents to be completed before the Lebanese Parliamentary elections." Kofi Annan pointed out the need for free elections to take place in Lebanon.
