  • [01] Suspected Russia gas blast kills 24, 20 trapped

    A suspected gas blast flattened part of a large apartment block in northern Russia early today, killing at least 24 people, including three children, and trapping about 20 more beneath the rubble.

    [02] Israeli missiles hit Gaza after suicide bombing

    Israel killed two Palestinians in an air strike into Gaza City today, launching what it said would be relentless military action against militants after a suicide bombing at a strategic port. Israel launched the air raid soon after its security cabinet decided on military retaliation for a double suicide bombing that killed 10 people in Ashdod port on Sunday.

    [04] Growing rumours about Denktash's withdrawl from Cyprus negotiations

    Rumours are growing in Cyprus over the impending departure of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash from the negotiating table in order to lead a campaign opposing the Anan plan. In the meantime, Assistant U.N. Secretary General, Kieran Prendergast arrived in Cyprus today where he will stay for one-week.

    [05] Extraordinary European Summit to discuss terrorism

    The terrorist attacks in Madrid will be discussed within the framework of the Ministers of Public Order and Justice during an extraordinary summit against terrorism on Friday as European countries remain in a state of emergency following the devastating attacks. The European Union may appoint a special anti-terrorism tsar in the wake of last weeks Madrid bombings, top EU officials said on Monday. Proposals for tougher EU action in response to Thursdays train blasts -- killing 200 people and wounding 1,500 are being floated amid fears that the Madrid attacks are a sign that Islamic militants are now targeting Europe.

    [06] Greece's NATO assistance request to be discussed tomorrow

    The Council of Permanent NATO Representatives will meet in Brussels tomorrow in order to discuss Greeces request for the alliances assistance for the security of the Olympic Games.

    [07] Olympics Security examined

    The security of the Olympic Games and the first conclusions from the Hercules Shield military exercises were closely examined today during the first meeting of the Olympics Security Coordinating Committee that took place at the Ministry of Public Order with the participation of ten ministers and the president of the Athens 2004 Olympics Organizing Committee, Gianna Angelopoulou.

    Mostly sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country, with some scattered clouds in the east and south. Winds northerly, light to strong, turning very strong in the southern Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range between 9-20 C and in Thessaloniki from 7-16 C.
