    Rebels battling to oust President Jean-Bertrand Aristide warned today an attack on the capital was imminent as heavily armed U.S. security forces helped foreigners fleeing the country.

    [02] Blair hit by Annan spying claim, U.N. cries foul

    Britain spied on U.N. chief Kofi Annan before the Iraq war, former minister Clare Short said today, threatening a fresh crisis for Prime Minister Tony Blair and drawing an angry response from the United Nations. Blair declined to address the claim, beyond saying British security services acted within domestic and international law. But the U.N. declared any such operation would be illegal.

    ATHOC president, Gianna Angelopoulou reassured that all Olympics projects would be ready within the specified timeframes during her speech to representatives from the Association of National Olympic Committees from 200 countries, where ATHENS 2004 presented the overall progress of Olympic Preparations.

    [04] FYROM president missing in crash,country mourns

    Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia President Boris Trajkovski, a moderate leader who helped unite his ethnically divided country, was missing and presumed dead today after his plane crashed in thick fog, the FYROM government said. The presidents party initially said he died in the crash, which happened in a remote, rocky area of mountainous southern Bosnia. However, NATO peacekeepers said the wreckage had not been located, contrary to a report by Bosnian police, and FYROMS government said the president was officially considered «missing» and presumed dead. In Skopje, FYROM Prime Minister Branko Crvenkovski said the country had "suffered a great loss" and it was time to mourn but did not say explicitly Trajkovski had been killed.

    New Democracy leader, Kostas Karamanlis spoke in favor of cooperation with non-governmental organizations today during his speech at a meeting of the Institute of Democracy. The ND leader presented a series of support measures for the support of NGOs including instituting a tax framework to encourage donations, access to European programs, creation of a Charter of Human Rights, and e-government.

    Communist party leader Aleka Papriga spoke out against bipartisanism today during a televised press conference at Zappeion Hall. Mrs. Papariga reiterated her partys positions concerning the 35-hour work week with a base monthly salary of 1,100 euro and also expressed her support for free education.

    The much-anticipated televised debate of the leaders of PASOK, ND, KKE, the Coalition and DIKKI is presently underway. The debate which began at 21:00 tonight, materialized after a long meeting of the parties representatives in Parliament. The discussion will be divided into 6 sections, 5 thematic and one free section, and the leaders will have 90 seconds to answer. The debate is expected to last approximately 2.5 hours. The political leaders will respond to questions concerning the economy, social polices, foreign affairs, education, health and public administration. Nikos Hatzinikolaou will be in charge of the debates coordination, while journalists, Pavlos Tsimas, Nikos Evangelatos, Stavros Theodorakis and Alexis Papahelas, will pose questions.
