  • [01] Greek and Turkish Cypriots still far apart in peace talks

    24/2/2004 9:12:00 μμ

Greek and Turkish Cyprios stuck to their guns today, in a new round of talks aimed at reunifying their island before it joins the European Union on May 1. Financial markets are watching the talks closely, aware that failure to forge a deal would mean only the Greek Cypriots join the EU. This could cement the island's ethnic division and dash Turkey's own hopes of opening entry talks with the bloc in 2005.

[02] Small opposition parties attack Pasok and ND

    24/2/2004 9:05:00 μμ

Speaking to Greek Post Office employees today, Communist Party General Secretary Aleka Papariga attacked both the Pasok and ND parties on the issue of privatization. In the meantime, Coalition of the Left leader Nikos Constantopoulos this evening addressed a pre-election rally of party supporters in Thessaloniki.

On his part, the leader of the DIKKI party, Dimitris Tsovolas, at a press conference today, accused the two major parties of neoliberal policies, noting that ND was and remains a conservative party, while Pasok is superseding ND with right-wing attitudes.

    24/2/2004 8:57:00 μμ

Prime Minister Costas Simitis this morning visited a project involving the unification of archaeological sites in Athens. He described it as a unique project for Greece and the world in general, which will highlight ancient monuments.

[04] Last-minute preparations for TV debate

    24/2/2004 8:51:00 μμ

With just 12 days to go before the March 7 elections, the two major parties, Pasok and New Democracy are concentrating on final preparations for the live televised debate on Thursday, between its leaders, George Papandreou and Costas Karamanlis, respectively. This evening, technical details are being determined, such as the identity of journalists who will ask the questions.
