    Israel will tear down part of its controversial West Bank barrier on the eve of World Court hearings, officials said today, as Palestinians stepped up protests against the structure of fences and towering walls.

    [02] Red Cross visits US-held Saddam Hussein in Iraq

    The International Committee of the Red Cross visited Saddam Hussein today for the first time since the former Iraqi leader was captured by U.S. troops in December. In the meantime, an Iraqi interpreter was killed and four US soldiers were injured during an attack on a motorcade in the city of Hasaoua, southwest of Baghdad.

    A sailing ban has been imposed at the ports of Piraeus and Rafina due to the gale force winds at the seas. On Whit Monday, the first day of Lent, gale force winds are expected to intensify and rain is expected to spread throughout the entire country.

    [04] Coalition leader sends letter to Papandreou and Karamanlis on debates

    In a letter addressed to Pasok president, George Papandreou and ND leader, Kostas Karamanlis, Coalition party leader, Nikos Konstantopoulos requested that at least one debate be conducted with the participation of all political party leaders. This morning, Mr. Konstantopoulos campaigned in the prefecture of Imathia while this evening he will address a party gathering in Veria.

    [05] Communist party's Papariga speaks out against bipartisanism

    Communist party leader, Aleka Papariga called on the popular classes to join forces during her speech at the Refugee Homes in Kallithea today. Mrs. Papariga once again lashed out against bipartisanism stressing that political suicide would be committed if citizens voted on the two major political parties.

    [06] ND leader campaigns in Dodekanese islands

    New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis presented his regional policies today during his tour of the Dodekanese islands. With respect to the island of Leros, the first stop of his tour, the ND leader proposed infrastructure and tourism upgrading and new employment positions at the Leros Therapeutic Center. During his speech in Kalymnos, Mr. Karamanlis elaborated on his partys islands policies and stressed opportunities must continue to be available for the less developed islands. The islands of Kos and Rhodes will be Mr. Karamanlis next stops.

    Political parties are entering the final two-week stretch for the March 7th elections. Pasok president George Papandreou who yesterday presented radical changes in the education sector is speaking at an open gathering in Tripolis this evening. Among yesterdays announcements by the president of Pasok were the creation of non-governmental not for profit universities, elimination of college entrance examinations, expanding all day schools for junior high and high schools and merging of the ministries of labor and education.

    Overcast, showery weather is forecast in the Ionian and on the mainland, with intermittent snowfall on high ground in the centre and north. Winds southeasterly, strong to very strong. Temperatures in Athens will range between 5-13 C and in Thessaloniki from 2-9 C.
