  • [01] Second major terrorist trial to begin tomorrow

    The second major trial involving the activities of terrorist organizations in Greece is scheduled to begin tomorrow. This time, the defendants are accused of membership in the Revolutionary Popular Struggle, known as ELA. The procedure is expected to be particularly interesting, in the event that evidence is revealed linking the group with other domestic and international urban guerrilla organizations.

    Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders were cautiously upbeat today, before heading for crucial UN-brokered talks in New York, aimed a reunifying Cyprus before the island joins the European Union on May 1. Both Greek Cypriot president Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said success in Tuesday's talks depended on the goodwill and the commitment of the other side.

    [03] ND leads Pasok in opinion poll, but Papandreou ahead of Karamanlis

    The latest opinion poll, conducted by Metron Analysis and published in the Sunday newspaper, Ethnos tis Kyriakis, today, indicates a 3.7% lead for New Democracy over Pasok, while ND leader Costas Karamanlis continues to trail George Papandreou this time by a narrow lead of 1.6%. The gap widened when respondents were asked which party they believed would win the March 7 elections, with ND gaining a significant edge of 21.2% over Pasok.

    Changing a partys leader does not mean a change in party policy, pointed out Communist Party General Secretary Aleka Papariga today, commenting on Pasoks method of electing a new leader. Speaking in Thessaloniki, she accused the leaders of the two major parties, Pasok and New Democracy of attempting to mislead the Greek people, and strongly criticized their programs.

    The main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis also described the voting method for Pasoks new leader as unprecedented, in an address to young business people in Thessaloniki. He dismissed it as a public relations trick and reiterated his challenge to Papandreou for a live televised dialogue. Karamanlis said his conservative partys aims were to create a state with social sensitivity and a society without party divisions.

    In statements this morning, the new Pasok leader George Papandreou who voted in the western suburb of Peristeri referred to a democratic party, with radical changes in the state system. He described the voting procedure as unprecedented and the result beyond all the partys predictions.

    The ruling Pasok partys Athens headquarters expressed satisfaction today, as thousands of party members and supporters cast their ballots to elect George Papandreou as the new leader, at some 3000 voting booths in Greece and abroad. The final results of the vote are expected to be announced at 10 oclock this evening.
