    David Kelly, the weapons expert, whose suicide rocked the British government, believed Iraq did pose an immediate threat, the BBC said today, just days before a critical report on his death, but he did not back Prime Minister Tony Blairs notorious claim that its weapons of mass destruction could be fired within 45 minutes

    Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian woman and wounded five people, including several youths, during a raid on a refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip today.

    Doctors employed by the state social security system, IKA, are on strike through Friday, in support of higher pay and better conditions. Only emergency cases will be treated at IKA clinics for the next two days.

    [04] President Stephanopoulos on official visit to Lebanon

    The President of the Greek Republic Costis Stephanopoulos today began a 3-day visit to Beirut, after an official invitation by his Lebanese counterpart, Emil Lahoud. His visit is of special historical importance, as he is the first Greek head of state to visit the country since the restoration of democracy.

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Anna said today he would resume talks over the divided island of Cyprus, if Greek and Turkish rivals were ready to settle the festering conflict. Talks between Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots have been in limbo for 10 months, raising the prospect of a divided island entering the European Union on May 1 and further entrenching partition

    The main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis, who is currently visiting Cyprus, today expressed optimism that the road for a reunited Cyprus in Europe was now viable. He was speaking in the village of Pyla, the only place on the island where Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots co-exist.

    [07] Laliotis joins Pasok's pre-election campaign

    Following a meeting today with Foreign Minister and future Pasok leader George Papandreou, the former secretary of the ruling partys Central Committee, Costas Laliotis, declared that he will be in the front line for the pre-election campaign. Laliotis, who will be in the 12th place on the State candidacy list, spoke of a new era, which requires a renewal of personalities and ideas.
