    [02] PM and ND leader clash over the economy

    There was an intense clash in parliament today, during the debate on the economy, at a party leaders' level. Prime Minister Costas Simitis accused the main opposition New Democracy party of presenting false evidence about the economy and pointed out that the public deficit was higher this year, because of Olympic Games projects. On his part, ND leader Costas Karamanlis said the ruling Pasok party was responsible for corruption and lack of transparency in the public sector.

    [03] IOC President notes great progress in Olympic projects

    Enormous progress has been made in Olympic projects and security for the Games, said International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, who wound up a visit to Athens today.

    However, he noted that the timetable was very tight. On the subject of security, he said everything humanly possible had been done to ensure that the Athens Olympics would be safe, but pointed out that no one could guarantee 100 percent security.

    [04] Nicosia's main aim is to settle the Cyprus dispute

    Speaking to the foreign press in Athens today, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said the prime aim was to settle the Cyprus issue and ensure the accession of a reunited Cyprus into the European Union. He added that Nicosia will ask the UN to re-open talks on resolving the divided island's fate after elections in the self-styled Turkish-Cypriot state next month.

    [05] Two pilots safe, after air force jet crashes

    The Greek Air Force lost its second aircraft in 24 hours today, when a fighter jet crashed into the sea, after its pilots had ejected safely, Defence Ministry officials said. The two pilots abandoned the Mirage 2000 jet and parachuted into the Aegean Sea, west of Chios island.

    [06] Released hunger strikers begin eating again

    Five anti-globalisation activists began taking food today, after a two-month hunger strike to protest against their imprisonment brought them to near death, according to their doctors. Greek authorities yesterday ordered the release of seven jailed anti-globalisation activists, including the five hunger strikers, after five months in prison, pending trial.

    [07] Israeli ambassador warns Syria not to support militants

    At a press conference in Athens today, the Israeli ambassador to Greece, Ram Aviram, warned Syria to withdraw its support from the militant Hamas and Jihad organizations before it is too late. In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Constantinople, the Israeli ambassador said he was satisfied with the security measures taken by Greece for the Olympics and expressed the view that the 2004 Games in Athens will be held without problems.

    [08] AIDS cases in Greece drop lower than EU average

    Data concerning the number of AIDS cases in Greece are very encouraging, as for the first time since 2000, the level is lower than the European average. In accordance with statistics released today, Health Minister Costas Stefanis said that Greece had 25 new cases and 243 HIV/AIDS carriers. He noted that the age group worst affected was 24-49, which had three-quarters of the cases.
