The worst terror bombings in Turkey's history coincided with President George W. Bush's trip to Britain and were blamed on al-Qaida. British Consul-General Roger Short was among the dead according to Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.Two members of the Greek community in Istanbul Vasilis Karamalis and Nikos Vafiadis were slightly injured in the terrorist attacks today, according to statements made by the Greek Consul General in the Turkish city. The PM condemned the terrorist actions that shook Istanbul and expressed his sorrow over incident and the victims. Mr. Simitis called those responsible for these actions to 'realize that they lead nowhere'.In the meantime, the Foreign and Health Ministries have stated they are prepared to offer any assistance that may be required in the country. (20/11/2003 8:30:00 μμ) [04] Heightened security measures in Greece after Istanbul blastsPolice said security was tightened around the British and American embassies, banks, companies and other foreign interests. Security forces had already boosted security around the Israeli Embassy and the city's synagogues after last week's blasts in Istanbul. Government spokesman Christos Protopapas said Greek police and other forces were already on alert as part of security preparations for the Aug. 13-29 Olympics, adding that the efforts will now be doubled.(20/11/2003 8:32:00 μμ) [05] PM presents Pasok's political declarationPM Simitis presented PASOK's political declaration this afternoon during a reception at Zappeion Hall. The PM underlined elections will be held in April or May at the end of the government's four-year term in accordance with the Constitution. According to information, new candidates will surpass 45% of the names on the ballots. In addition, the age limit for pension issuance for one category of insured will increase by six months while free-lance professionals will be eligible for pensions after 37 years with no age limit.
