    Clouds and showers in all parts of the country. Temperatures in Athens will range between 7-13 C; and in Thessaloniki from 4C to 12 C. Snow may fall on Mount Parnes outside the capital.

    [02] Big changes in city life during 2004 Olympics

    Major changes in the day-to-day activities and operations in Athens and the other Olympics cities will be implemented between August 2nd and September 4th in view of the 2004 Olympiad. This was decided today after a meeting between Prime Minister Simitis, ATHOC president Gianna Angelopoulou and related ministers.

    All mass transit will operate on a 24-hour basis while shops will be open from 9 am until 9 pm on weekdays and from 9 am until 6 pm on Saturdays. Shops will remain closed on Sunday. During the same time period garbage collection will take place after 3am.

    [03] "Der Spiegel" article "far from reality"

    The government categorically denied the allegations in the German magazine 'Der Spiegel' according to which Albanian extremists are preparing terrorist actions prior to the Olympic Games in Athens.

    Both government spokesperson, Christos Protopappas and the Minister of Public Order, Giorgos Floridis stated the article had no contact with reality.

    [04] Turkish FM wants explanations about EU progress report

    Turkish Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul requested explanations from the European troika with respect to the European Commission's latest progress report. The report warns Ankara that the Cyprus issue in danger of becoming its strongest obstacle to Turkey's European course.

    Gul urged Greek-Cypriots today to do more to help reunify

    [05] Cyprus, which is months away from joining the European Union. Gul said he hoped a compromise could be found even if Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash - who rejected a plan by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to reunify the island - wins parliamentary elections on Dec. 14. The Turkish minister didn't spell out his idea of a compromise.

    Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said today he would quit as negotiator in stalled talks to reunite

    [09] Holy Synod to send delegation to Fanari

    The Metropolites of Sparta and Xanthi will deliver the Holy Synod's recent decision on the crisis between the two sides to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fanari that will respond after the official communication of the decision.

    Meanwhile, Ecumenichal Patriarch, Vartholomaios met with the Metropolites of Ioannina and Kavala, who were among the eight who departed from the recent Hierarchy meeting in protest.

    [10] Less beaurocracy in public sector

    Transactions between citizens and the public sector will be simplified following an amendment to be voted on in Parliament next week. The amendment foresees the abolishment of birth and death certificates and divorce decrees that were needed for transactions with the public sector. Citizens will now verbally provide the related information to the responsible authorities which will be obligated to search for the related certificate or transcript.

    [11] US commander vows to get tough, bombs kill Iraqis

    The top U.S. military commander in Iraq said today he was ready to unleash any weapon in his arsenal on guerrillas as the latest bombings killed at least four people and wounded 10 in the country's two biggest cities. At least three more explosions echoed across the Iraqi capital Baghdad this evening, although the location of the blasts was not immediately clear

    [12] Car bomb near Afghan U.N. compound wounds one

    At least one person was wounded today when explosives hidden in a vehicle went off outside a United Nations office in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar. A U.N. special envoy to Afghanistan, said a student had been hurt in the blast, which went off at around 4 p.m. local time
