    [02] Papantoniou says Greek Air Force one of world's strongest

    Military air force celebrations took place today at the Air Force Academy in Dekelia in the presence of the President of the Republic, Costis Stefanopoulos and the Minister of the Defense, Giannos Papantoniou. The defense minister expressed his pride and reassurance that the Greek Air Force is one of the strongest in the world. As Mr. Papantoniou underlined the Air Force is a powerful weapon for Greece, which is strengthened by an ambitious equipment program

    [03] Patriarch of Jerusalem confident church crisis will be resolved

    In an interview to Net Radio, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Irinaios expressed his optimism that the Church of Greece and Fanari will resolve their crisis. At the same time, the Church of Greece is expecting the final response from Fanari on the Hierarchy's decisions to have the final word on the approval of candidate Metropolites. The list of candidates for the Metropolites of the new countries, will be sent to the Fanari, so that it may carry out its rights, but the final word will come from the Church of Greece.

    [04] PM accuses ND of populism from Serres

    During a speech in Serres, Prime Minister Costas Simitis committed to placing particular emphasis on strengthening--social cohesion and low-income households during the period 2004-2008. The PM called for the country's productive powers to join forces while he accused the ND party of populism.

    During a speech in Rethymno Crete yesterday, the leader of the New Democracy party, Konstantinos Karamanlis criticised the government's policies on all issues. This afternoon, Mr. Karamanlis attended celebrations for the historic anniversary of the Arkadiou holocaust while tonight he will speak at a rally in the city of Suda in Chania.

    Greece has the lowest crime rate of all EU countries, according to research presented in Eleftherotypia newspaper today on crime rates in community countries. At the same time, Greeks remain the most insecure and in greatest fear of crime of all other peoples in Europe.

    [07] US pounds Saddam hometown; Red Cross shuts offices

    U.S. warplanes and armoured vehicles pounded suspected guerrilla hideouts in former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's hometown today after six soldiers died in the shooting down of a Black Hawk helicopter.

    The International Committee of the Red Cross, fearful for the safety of its staff operating in Iraq, announced it was temporarily shutting its offices in Baghdad and the southern city of Basra.

    In a new attack by insurgents in Falluja, west of Baghdad, two U.S. soldiers were killed and one wounded when a roadside bomb was detonated near their convoy.

    The United States shut its diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia today and its close ally Britain declared there was a high threat of terrorist attacks in neighbouring Bahrain and Qatar. Warning that guerrillas could be on the verge of carrying out attacks in Saudi Arabia, both Washington and London urged their nationals in the Gulf Arab state to remain vigilant.

    The army said today rebels shot and hacked to death scores of civilians in northern

    [09] Uganda on Thursday night and Friday morning, beheading some of them, in apparent revenge for the killing of a rebel commander. The Vatican missionary news service said rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army killed about 60 people on a rampage through Lira district.

    [10] Algerian army kills Islamic insurgents

    The Algerian army killed 16 suspected Islamic insurgents this week as it hunted for militants waging an 11-year campaign of violence according to newspapers today. The bloodiest crackdown occurred near Youb, 450 kilometers west of Algiers on Friday, with eight armed Islamic militants killed and two arrested. The army also discovered a stock of weapons. The same day, two other armed militants were killed and one captured 300 kilometers west of Algiers, according to the daily, Le Matin.
