    [02] Church's highest body to convene on crisis

    Intense concern prevails in ecclesiastical circles about the crisis between the Orthodox Patriarchate and the Church of Greece over jurisdiction in relation to northern Greek dioceses. A decision has now been taken by Archbishop Christodoulos to stop all statements on the issue, and to convene an emergency meeting of the church's highest body on November 4, 5 and 6.

    [03] State ready to deal with extreme weather conditions

    The state mechanism is in a state of heightened readiness to deal with any problems that may emerge, due to the extreme weather phenomena reported in most parts of the country since yesterday. Today there were fierce storms in the Ionian islands, Epirus, western Macedonia and mainland Greece. Due to the bad weather conditions, domestic shipping schedules to the Saronic islands are being carried out only with closed vessels.

    [04] US Secretary of State unable to visit Athens

    US Secretary of State Colin Powell will not be visiting Greece this week, as initially announced. Press Minister Christos Protopappas clarified today that due to a heavy schedule of obligations in the Middle East, Powell will be unable to make the trip to Greece ' which, anyway, was not official.

    [05] ND leader slams government's economic policy

    Main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis wound up a 3-day tour of Epirus today with a speech in Yannena. Addressing representatives of business associations, the ND president launched a strong verbal attack on the government's economic policy, maintaining that despite numerous European Union packages, the Greek economy remained the poorest in the EU.

    [06] Pasok trails ND by 7.8% in latest opinion poll

    According to a new opinion poll, published today in the Sunday newspaper, "Kathimerini tis Kyriakis", the New Democracy party continues to lead the ruling Pasok party in voters' preferences by 7.8 percent. Nearly 40 percent of respondents said they would vote for ND in the next elections, followed by Pasok with 31.5 percent and the Greek Communist party with six percent

    [07] Strikes continue in health and sanitation sectors

    Only emergency cases will be treated at IKA outpatients' clinics from tomorrow, for the next four days, due to a strike by state-employed doctors, demanding higher pay. Municipal employees ' including garbage collectors ' will also stage another 48-hour strike starting tomorrow.

    In the meantime, policemen, firemen and coastguard officers plan to hold a demonstration tomorrow afternoon in downtown Athens, in support of their demands for increased salaries.

    Guerrillas killed two American soldiers overnight and blew up a US ammunition truck today, as Iraq's US-appointed Governing Council called for an end to "conspiracies" threatening the country's stability

    [09] Gunmen wound 5 Israelis in the West Bank

    Gunmen opened fire on Israelis north of the West Bank city of Ramallah today, wounding at least five people, a security source said. The shooting occurred this evening, in an areas known as Ein Yavrut, near the Jewish settlement of Ofra.
