    [02] FM Papandreou departs tomorrow for talks in New York

    Foreign minister George Papandreou is scheduled to leave tomorrow for New York, where he will have talks with his counterparts from other countries, including Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The focus of discussions will be the Cyprus issue, the situation in Iraq and the Greek proposal of an international ceasefire during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

    [03] More Turkish violations of Greek airspace

    Despite an improved climate in Greek-Turkish relations, Ankara is continuing its provocative tactics in the Aegean. Today 26 Turkish fighter jets entered Athens FIR, successively violating Greek national airspace. Commenting on the infringements, Foreign Undersecretary Yannis Magriotis noted that Turkish violations were frequent each time that a significant development was awaited in a bilateral issue.

    [04] Bi-ministerial meeting focuses on 2004 Para-Olympics

    The organisation of the Para-Olympics in 2004 was the focal point of today's meeting of a bi-ministerial committee, chaired by Prime Minister Costas Simitis, also attended by the President of the Athens 2004 organising committee, Yanna Angelopoulou. Simitis stressed that ' apart from being an important athletic event ' the Para-Olympic Games was also a new challenge, because it would facilitate initiatives to improve access to the city by people with special needs.

    [05] Procedures outlined for public utility supplies to illegal homes

    Within the next few days, the Public Works and Environment Minister plans to issue a circular to all city zoning authorities, outlining procedures for about 300,000 illegally built homes to be connected to phone, water and power supplies. Meanwhile, a bill defining forest land ' expected to open up the way for the legalisation of more homes ' will be tabled in parliament by the end of the year.

    [06] Education Minister wants striking professors' pay docked

    In a letter sent to university deans and technical college directors, Education Minister Petros Efthymiou has called for striking professors' pay to be docked for the period of their industrial action. Tomorrow, a meeting is scheduled between their union representatives and Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis.

    [07] Legal aid to be introduced for low-income groups

    Justice Minister Philippos Petsalnikos today unveiled a bill providing for a new system of legal aid for low-income groups. The proposed legislation will make free legal representation available to low-earning European Union citizens, as well as foreign nationals legally resident in Greece or an EU member state.

    [09] Israeli forces kill Islamic militant in the Gaza Strip

    Israeli troops today killed an Islamic militant, who tried to enter a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip, after Israel rejected a conditional ceasefire proposal by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
