[06] G7 presses Asia to let its currencies rise

Germany, France and Britain papered over differences on a common European defence policy and constitution at a summit on Saturday, in a bid to show a common European front after a year of open rifts. The leaders of the three countries signalled a common approach to boosting growth in Europe, with Britain backing a Franco-German initiative to promote infrastructure projects. They also issued a joint letter to the European Commission seeking changes to draft EU chemicals industry legislation they called too bureaucratic. But some analysts felt the show of unity was unconvincing and that domestic concerns remained closer to the three leaders' hearts.

In the meantime, gunmen shot and seriously wounded a leading woman member of Iraq's Governing Council today. Attackers in the Iraqi capital fired on a car carrying Akila al-Hashemi, a Shi'ite Muslim and career diplomat in the latest in a string of assaults on Iraqis cooperating with the country's occupying powers.
