Temperatures in Athens will range from 18C and 28C; and in Thessaloniki from 17C to 26C.(16/9/2003 8:23:00 μμ) [02] PM Simitis meets Cypriot president Tasos PapadopoulosThe latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the possibility to restart negotiations based on the Annan plan were discussed today in Athens between Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and the President of the Cypriot Republic Tasos Papadopoulos.According to the PM, both sides reaffirmed their dedication to the United Nations peace process for the Cyprus issue and stated that no other peace plan would be accepted outside the UN. (16/9/2003 8:26:00 μμ) [03] Cypriot presidents contacts in AthensThe developments in the Cyprus issue were also discussed today during consecutive meetings the Cypriot president had today with the President of the Greek Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos and the President of the Greek Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis.His reassurance that the Greek Parliament will continue to stand beside Cyprus, aimed at reuniting the island, rid it of the occupation forces and succeed in the peaceful coexistence of the entire Cypriot people, was given to President Papadopoulos, by the President of the Greek Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis. This afternoon, the Cypriot president met with the leader of the New Democracy party, Konstantinos Karamanlis, who expressed his party's support for Mr. Papadopoulos efforts and the Annan plan. (16/9/2003 8:28:00 μμ) [04] FM Papandreou's contacts in the USThere is much interest over the contacts to be held today and tomorrow in the United States between Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou and officials of the US government and Congress.Greek time this afternoon, Mr. Papandreou met with the State Department's special coordinator for the Cyprus issue, Thomas Weston. After the meeting, Mr. Weston stated that a solution to the Cyprus issue remains one of the American government's top priorities. Later today, the Greek Foreign Minister will meet with President Bush's special advisor, Condoleeza Rice while tomorrow he will meet with his US counterpart, Colin Powell. During his meeting with Mr. Powell discussed will be bilateral issues, regional and international issue with emphasis on the security of the 2004 Olympic Games and the Cyprus issue. The two men will also examine the developments in the Middle East, Iraq and the Balkans. (16/9/2003 8:31:00 μμ) [05] Defense Minster Papantoniou asks US to intervene in IsraelThe Minister of the National Defense, Giannos Papantoniou, requested today the substantial and active intervention of the US in Israel in order for the Israeli government to immediately cease threats of violence. Mr. Papantoniou was speaking at a memorial event for Giannos Kranidiotis that was organized by the Greek Center of European Studies.(16/9/2003 8:32:00 μμ) [06] Bi-Minstrial meeting on electoral law on Sept. 24thThe Minister of the Interior Costas Scandalidis stated today that the final proposal for the new electoral will be formed after a dialogue to be held within PASOK and noted that the biministrial committee would examine the new law on September 24th. Mr. Skandalides underlined the new electoral law would be voted on in 2003 even if there is no agreement from the opposition parties.ND MP Viron Polidoras stated the ND party would not participate in the dialogue which it considers a pretense but noted however it would participate in the parliamentary discussion. Left wing MP's insist on their position for the institution of the simple proportionate vote. Security Council prepared to vote on a resolution opposing Israeli threats to "remove" the Palestinian president. The Israeli Justice Minister called instead on the Palestinians to "take up the fight" against militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad that have killed hundreds of Israelis during a three-year-old uprising for statehood.Arafat's national security adviser, Jibril al-Rajoub, had called earlier on Israel to stop "assassinations" of militant leaders, raids and punitive demolitions of homes. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder hosts French President Jacques Chirac and British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Berlin to try to reach agreement on the way forward.
