    A fine and hot day is forecast, with local cloudy patches on the mainland later in the afternoon.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 23 to 35 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 21 to 34 degrees.

    [02] 6.4-Richer quake hits Lefkada island

    A major earthquake, off the western Greek island of Lefkada, injured 30 people today, sparking an exodus of holidaymakers, at the height of the tourist season. The tremor, which cracked roads and damaged buildings, measured 6.4 on the Richter scale and was the biggest to hit Greece for a decade. It was felt as far away as Athens and southern Italy.

    [03] PM to return from summer holidays on Sunday

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis is scheduled to return to Athens on Sunday from summer holidays in Sifnos. On Monday, he will visit the Olympic Beach Volley Centre and the coastal projects in Faliro, as well as the Olympic Sailing Centre in Aghios Cosmas. Later, he will have a working session with the Finance and National Economy Minister, Nikos Christodoulakis, to discuss the "Charter of Social Convergence," which he will announce during his visit to the 68th annual Thessaloniki International Trade Fair on September 5, 6 and 7.

    [04] Briton arrested for fatal stabbing on Rhodes island

    A British tourist was charged yesterday with Tuesday's killing of a UK teenager, during a drunken brawl at a nightclub on the island of Rhodes. Police said 21-year-old Peter Mark Navarro had admitted to stabbing 17-year-old Paddy Doran with a broken bottle, at the Faliraki resort. Another 10 British nationals were also charged with complicity in the murder and participation in the brawl, as well as drug offences.

    [05] Illegal immigrants drown off the coast of Mytilini

    At least four illegal immigrants, including three children, drowned today, when a small fishing boat, carrying about 40 people, capsized off the eastern Aegean island of Mytilini. Rescuers retrieved another 32 people from the sea and are still searching for others. There were no immediate details on the immigrants' nationalities

    [06] Oil spill from Greek ship kills Pakistani wildlife

    A Greek oil tanker, grounded off Pakistan's port city of Karachi, has broken in two, leaking thousands of tonnes of crude oil and killing wildlife. Salvage and draining operations will continue once the ship is stabilised, and pollution control experts from Holland, England and Greece have been assisting

    [07] British soldier killed, two wounded in Iraq

    A British soldier was killed and two were wounded, when a roadside bomb hit a military ambulance in the southern Iraqi city of Basra today. It was the first British fatality in a hostile incident since June 25, when six soldiers were killed in the village of Majjar. A spokesman said it was too early to speculate who was behind the attack

    Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant commander today, triggering vows of revenge, amid mounting signs that a six-week-old ceasefire, crucial to a US-backed peace plan, could collapse.

    [09] Blast at Spanish refinery kills 4 workers

    An explosion ripped through gasoline storage tanks at a Repsol oil refinery in central Spain today, killing four workers and halting production. The blast started a fire at the refinery that was still raging hours later.
